Best way to straighten BENT pins on a cpu?

So I was removing a clients heatsink to get to the cpu (rocking it back and forth to prevent "yanking" the chip off) but ended up bending the pins anyway and now I have an AMD 4200+ X2 chip that's got some pins bent this way, and the other way if you understand what I mean. Siome pins have bent straight down.

I've been trying to straighten the pins with a flat head screwdriver, a 0.5 mm mechanical pencil and a credit card to keep track of the rows etc... But it's quite bad. No pins have been clipped off (yet!) but I'm having a very difficult time with this.

If anybody has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate it! Or maybe there's some sort of device I can buy to help me fix this?

Thanks,

Majestic

I've never heard of such a device. I use a steel rule to keep pins in track and a small medical clamp for gripping pins when needed.

The 0.5mm pencil is good to use if it has a metal barrel end for the lead. Remove the lead and use the end to slide over the pins then slowly bend them back into position.

I've done this and it works. I'm a bit of a klutz and I dropped a CPU about 3 weeks ago.

bent pins on cpu

ah well looks like I have no choice but to get a new cpu. There's just too many areas (middle and sides ) and I don't have any more patience for it.

Thanks all for your advice.

I guess I'll go out and invent a device to unbend pins for Techies!

I tried with all methods and really... I think with all the time I put into this I SPENT more money on this cpu than what it's worth.

Cheers all..

How do you manage to bend CPU pins when all mainboards thesedays use ZIF sockets?

If a CPU has been that badly handled I wouldn't rely upon it being fit for purpose even if you can straighten the pins.

I would suggest use a pair of the metal ruler thin enough to make pin alignment side by side, row by row also cross the direction as well.

Have to be very patient!
