Backup Windows Server 2012 to NAS... How do you do it

We have several backup solutions that we use. The best one but also most expensive is ShadowProtect backup by Storagecraft which retails for $1095. Then the next one is BackupAssist software which is $279 retail. We are reseller/partners for both solutions.

We haven't tried on server 2012, but testing backupper server edition. Seems very powerful for the price, I think it's 160 per server, or like 799 for their technician edition which is unlimited servers and systems for one tech in a single company. We are considering purchasing, but what I've seen so far I'm impressed.

If you only need the latest image and nothing fancy you can always use the built in Windows Backup. This won't allow you to have multiple revision though. The only way that is done that i'm aware of with Windows Backup is if you backup to a dedicated hard drive within the same server. If the server is virtual, you may be able to get around that. Again, only a simple free solution depending on your needs.

I use Macrium Reflect Server Ed:

(sign up to the reseller program for a discount on those prices).

For server systems, I run numerous scheduled full system Reflect backups (to both internal storage and NAS, with auto-verify and email notification on failure). For remote recovery I use Macrium's PE boot iso, via the server's LOM.

I run Windows Server Backup to a Synology drive's shared folder setup as a dedicated AD backup user. This gives me my nightly backups. Then, I run a Synology chron backup job for that folder 1 time per week and dump those "snapshots" into a separate folder. Once every so often I go and clean out the old redundant backups (6-12 months) which is the only downside ATM. I gotta figure out how to delete stuff based on time since creation - on the Synology.
