In what cases would you use a 24 awg guage Ethernet cable verses a 30 gauge cable?. Does it generally depend on how long the cables are going to be? ie lower gauge means less resistance (thicker wire) for better signal propagation?

If you go to Monoprice to their patch cable menu, there is an option to search by 24 awg or 30 awg criteria.

OK so if 30 is not standard for Ethernet, which gauges are and why would you use one over the other?

24 is the standard.
You'll find some 30 weight for special applications, notice usually when you see 30 ethernet that it's flat cable. Say for super cramped point of sale setups, or super small form factor setups in tight quarters, perhaps a kiosk or monitor up on a wall...disguise the cable easier. Usually just short runs made to patch a node to a wall jack. Not something you want to use as a home run carrying lots of traffic.

Like I said. 30 awg cable does not meet any standard for Ethernet cabling. Just because they make it and people use it, doesn't mean they should.

Heck they make CCA cable and people use that even though it doesn't meet standards or and of the Codes.

Just for the record. Sometimes I prefer to ask folk at Technibble as opposed to searching online for answers, because since I know the answers are coming from experienced techs, I can more or less rely on the data.

Pants has asked a lot of questions and sure, some have been pretty common sense ones but what's common sense to one may not be to someone else.
I learned a bit from the answers Pants got and in some cases the questions were of things I have never questioned myself.
If anything, I'd say Pants was being careful (sometimes to a fault) to get to a point where he felt comfortable enough to begin trading.
I remember when I was a kid, people got mildly annoyed because all I did was ask "Why" of everything.

Perhaps change to "computer techs and tech business owners" ?

I would guess majority of active members are primarily techs in business ie just them - or tech business owners. A smaller number are employed as techs who may move into their own business. A survey?
Is this forum still realy aimed at "want to be techs soon" ie not tech at present ? doesn't that make them End Users? I thought it was for existing techs who wanted to make the move into \ improve their business?
