In what cases would you use a 24 awg guage Ethernet cable verses a 30 gauge cable?. Does it generally depend on how long the cables are going to be? ie lower gauge means less resistance (thicker wire) for better signal propagation?

If you go to Monoprice to their patch cable menu, there is an option to search by 24 awg or 30 awg criteria.

OK so if 30 is not standard for Ethernet, which gauges are and why would you use one over the other?

Sorry, but do you even know anything about this business? Asking a couple of questions is one thing, but do a Google search and find the information on your own and learn something while doing it.

I'm through with you and your constant questions that anyone with average knowledge of this industry would know.

24 is the standard.
You'll find some 30 weight for special applications, notice usually when you see 30 ethernet that it's flat cable. Say for super cramped point of sale setups, or super small form factor setups in tight quarters, perhaps a kiosk or monitor up on a wall...disguise the cable easier. Usually just short runs made to patch a node to a wall jack. Not something you want to use as a home run carrying lots of traffic.

You would never use a 30 awg Ethernet cable. It doesn't even come close to meeting the standard.

Who is making and selling 30 awg cable?

Sorry, but do you even know anything about this business? Asking a couple of questions is one thing, but being too lazy (or whatever it is you are) to do a Google search and find the information on your own and learn something while doing it is beyond my understanding.

Judging from the information that Stonecat has posted, you are the one who doesn't know what you're talking about.

Like I said. 30 awg cable does not meet any standard for Ethernet cabling. Just because they make it and people use it, doesn't mean they should.

Heck they make CCA cable and people use that even though it doesn't meet standards or and of the Codes.

No, you didn't "say" that.

Your comment here is a bunch of BS. I don't buy it for a second. What's happening here is that you were wrong from the start, and are attempting to shift the responsibility of your wrong onto me.

Dude,

I'm not the one asking the million basic question that any qualified tech would know the answer too.

30 awg cable does not meet any standards for any Ethernet cable. That is a fact

Stop your trolling and insinuation of lies about me.

Stop pretending that you knew everything about networking when you started, because you DIDN'T. And stop acting as though you didn't learn how to network like everybody else, by reading books and getting help from other people. You are mortal, just like everybody else here.

A simple Google would have answered your question. Mercenary is correct.

Just for the record. Sometimes I prefer to ask folk at Technibble as opposed to searching online for answers, because since I know the answers are coming from experienced techs, I can more or less rely on the data.

Guys, can we please keep any and all personal insults away from the forums.

I have cleaned the thread up. Any more insults, flaming or trolling, and punitive action may be taken against you.

Everyone's right! Your question I did not know the answer too and was curious so I looked!
I found the answer in 5 minutes

I Object !!!

over-using the forums

- Asking too many questions is now a crime against the overly informed? whatever happened to the rules about keeping quiet \\ ignoring a post if the Q was "beneath" you? How many is too many ?
Dont other people benefit from the Q&A ? Jeez people - just use the "ignore" function.
If the topics \ questions raised on this forum was restricted to those that could be not found else where you'd have a very quiet site.

Awaiting your'e pm Mr.Admin:mad:

Pants has asked a lot of questions and sure, some have been pretty common sense ones but what's common sense to one may not be to someone else.
I learned a bit from the answers Pants got and in some cases the questions were of things I have never questioned myself.
If anything, I'd say Pants was being careful (sometimes to a fault) to get to a point where he felt comfortable enough to begin trading.
I remember when I was a kid, people got mildly annoyed because all I did was ask "Why" of everything. :D

Why not use the "-Rep" & associated comment? That way a forum members get some feedback on their posts. A bunch of related -Reps maybe a hint.

A slight off topic - but relevant in light of recent status query-

" These forums are for either current computer technicians, or soon to be computer technicians. We do not provide computer help to any non-technicians."

Perhaps change to "computer techs and tech business owners" ?

I would guess majority of active members are primarily techs in business ie just them - or tech business owners. A smaller number are employed as techs who may move into their own business. A survey?
Is this forum still realy aimed at "want to be techs soon" ie not tech at present ? doesn't that make them End Users? I thought it was for existing techs who wanted to make the move into \ improve their business?

Apologies for ramble. Early start to a Looong day.
