Arghhh..I work in the health industry (IT) and we are getting barraged by dont like to say but probie execs & dr's that just MUST have the latest. The latest flavour is of course the iPad 3. These users have no idea of tech and fall for all the media hype that apple targets (does well I might add).

Though is frustrating from a tech point of view how Apple release a piece of **** with little or no benifit than the last. For instance 4G, this service is not even available within Australia until I think eta - 2014-15 and by then ther will be iPlod 42. So what other benifits, more pixels nice screen res & better camera BUY A CAMERA!, WOW!

I'm actually reading your post on my "New iPad", aka iPad 3 and I gotta say the screen is just awesome.... ;)

I think it's important to embrace all the tech out there even if you don't personally like it, just so that you can support it effectively...after all, helping someone with their iPad now could lead to a bigger job down the road....

I guess that depends on how the technology is applied. You dont state what the application is, and the limitations or benefits of the hardware for it. Without that information, frankly, your post just sounds like a bit of a whinge.

Dont get me wrong, I dont like the whole 'tablet' craze, and feel that eventually this will greatly diminish the amount of repair business that we can do.

But thats an issue of not liking the effects of the technology, rather than just hating the technology outright, which seems to be your situation. Tough for you because I dont see Apple disappearing off the retail techscape any time soon.

Tell me, if they had opted for Android products would you have been feeling so hard done by? Just curious.

I can see why a lot of people like them, but me personally I would much rather be on a pc with a big screen or at least a laptop with a 15in. or bigger screen. Part of that is because my eyes aren't very good. The other part is I can't stand touch screens really.

To me they are overpriced, but apparently the rest of the world feels "different" haha

Just bought one today and I absolutely love it. It's definitely not a piece of **** as you say. No offense but quit hating.

Sure, they're over priced, but it's not like they are Microsoft putting out crappy product after crappy product. The simple fact of the matter is that Apple understands that people want the latest and the greatest, so as a business model, thats what they provide. If you can't handle that, maybe this is the wrong business for you.

No doubt apple does make good products. I just can't believe how many millions of people buy everything apple comes out with. Props to apple though for making it work and banking mad money.

I wouldn't mind having a macbook air though. I set one up for a customer this week and man that thing is slick and fast with the 256 SSD drive. It boots in like 7 seconds.

The problem for some of the healthcare providers I support is that the EHR application they are using in the office does not provide a native iOS application. They access the applications over Citrix, which is doable but not as nice as a native iOS application. They do use it for email and web browsing as well as the other medical applications out there.

You need to do a bit of research first. 4G is here in Australia but Telstra doesnt support the frequency the Ipad 3 is using. However Optus are launching a compatible 4G service this year starting in the Hunter in the next few months.

Ipads while frustrating to initially intergrate into existing networks, keep the technically stupid off of PC's where they can cause more problems.

Overpriced isn't necessarily accurate anymore either. Macbook Air is comparable to new ultrabooks by other manufacturers (MBA clones) and iPads are about a cheap as they come comparing to most any decent (ie speedy) android tablet (minus the Kindle Fire, but that's not really comparable either due to screen size and raw speed).

Basically, they own the markets they have started recently and by monopolizing component sources due to the demand they are staying even or sometimes cheaper than the competition.

Yea we do use citrix 4 remote access and email. Yes this post was posted as a whing, reason being as to why its here. I am a hater of apple, I don't like the overpriced bs they release. also the false marketing used as in 4g , when its not even available here. I have done my research, is it here at the moment..no. So will it be when ipad 4 is released lol..most probably.

The best thing about the release of the iPad3 is that the prices will drop on 2nd hand iPad2 :D

Wish they'd drop more! I thought this with ipad 1 but still hold value well.

Early days so I keep looking for a bargain. :p

In reponse to OP - I dont NEED one but I'd like one as I can see it streamline alot of my onsite paperwork which my iphone cant do.

Yea Im an android boy, oh well thank you all for the input. I can see there a large majority of ppl that like and use apple proucts here. All well and good for you, each to their own for me personally I find it all meh.

cheers!

I'm not a fan of tablets yet....I still cling to my laptop rather than get a tablet/ipad.

My largest client is a healthcare agency...a Hospice. Approx 90 staff...about 35 mobile nurses.

Years ago they had laptops with mobile versions of their main application...nurses would VPN in from home and "synchronize/replicate" their database.

And then worrying about laptops (with healthcare info) being lost/stolen, and HIPAA rules/regs, I started doing laptops with hardware FDE (full disk encryption)...but wow that got expensive, 2,500 bucks per laptop.

With their big physical servers and VMWare.....plenty of space leftover for a terminal server, so I installed Server 2008 R2 for Remote Desktop Services...and for security....I setup TSGateway, to "proxy" in remote desktop users to go to the Terminal Server or their desktops/workstations. (basically replacing RWW of their Small Business Server). Just needed port 443 open, no 3389. And secure NTLM authentication.

Started getting cheaper laptops...just left them in stand along workgroup mode, and an RDP shortcut to it. They used Verizon mifi 2200 hot spots to connect while out in the field and doing onsites.

And then they wanted to try an iPad. Needed to find a remote desktop client for the iPad that supported TSGateway with NTLM..and found iTap Remote.
The iPads with their built in 3G work very well. Much as I don't like iPads....we have a good connecting, very small and portable...secure way to let the nurses connect from out in the field..patients homes, nursing homes, hospitals, etc. And they're only 600 bucks a pop...versus what we were spending on laptops.

I just read in our local paper the city officials are all loading up with $799 ipads with tax dollars, they are saying they can justify it by the savings in printing all their memos, etc. a couple schools are providing them too. I have noticed a large decline in pc repairs since 2010, I live in a techy medical/tech industrial community, bums me out, I don't own a tablet, just a droid phone and I don't see the profit margins for fixing droids, unless I can get huge volumes up, I may have to move into more app support maybe, got to try and find a niche.

We as technicians need to understand one very important thing, tablets, slates ipads, androids...they are here and we need to be able to support them if our clients ask for support. I love the PC for one main reason, they FAIL. The same with Apple products, they FAIL. If they didn't THEN we would need to worry.

As the global economy speeds up, the need for our technical expertise is only going to increase. Instead of seeing this as a road block, maybe we need to see this as a golden opportunity.

Its not necessarily the product I hate. I hate the mentality that everything apple is great.

What pissess me off about apple is their lies in marketing. Stuff like the cloud sync....how long was this available before they actually allowed it on their phones? Why did they steal wifi sync from a developer and throw him to the wind. And why did it then take them 2 years to make it happen.

Can anyone explain why an Ipad 2 can pickup a blackberry, and an android phone via bluetooth but not a Iphone? Nope. its all about their lock down to get customers to buy into their services.

their products are good products, their marketing tactics are repulsive.

wifi sync evidence

Dont get me wrong, every company has bad ways, but when so many people talk about how awesome Apple is and how they are so much better than microsoft, or anyone else. Please, they are just as bad as every one else. Ill stick with my PC and android, thanks.

Back as a CS undergrad, I took a multimedia class. Of course we worked on Macs and stored projects on a Mac server. One class before our final 3D modeling presentations and then the cursed server ate my entire project during a cut & paste operation! Been irrationally bitter ever since.

I don't necessarily hate Apple products, but I'm a detractor for sure. My dislike is probably political at this point, since it's directly at traits that make Apple products unique and popular - the uniformity and control (at various levels) that they enforce over their ecosystem. I think it's funny that my wife's an artist, yet she genuinely despises any and all of Apple's products. Of course, both of us will still gladly accept a free iPad if offered. :D

I see the niche for tablets in general. I don't particularly understand the excitement over the iPad (or iPhone, for that matter), but Apple is good at figuring out how to excite people (whereas I am not at all excitable). I might even buy an Android tablet someday, though even then just as a slightly more portable laptop.

As to the professional aspect - I could see mobile device repairs being a source of business, particularly for the more expensive tablets and smartphones. One problem, though, is the rapid turnover. Every year we get another generation of more powerful devices marketed to replace the original ones. Also, because tablets and smartphones are being pushed by mobile phone marketers, we may also have the contract problem. Every two years, people think that they're getting a "free" or "cheap" device with their contract renewals, so you need to find that sweet spot between the upgrade and the warranty expiring. The contracts make the devices feel more disposable, as opposed to a PC or laptop which can sit around for many years. Think how many businesses still run 5-10 year old Windows XP PCs.

As a side note, I just recently started a path to escape from the cycle of overpaying for a "subsidized" contract phone. Even then, we still still have to fight the implanted idea that we can get "practically free" upgrade devices even as our contract ticks down to its final doom.

I've never had much experience of Apple stuff and tbh always avoided supporting them.

A few months ago I thought I'd check out OSX on a VirtualBox and found it all a bit Fisher-Price and not for me.

Then I had to transfer an old (as in a in long time, not age) customer's setup from Windows laptop to Apple laptop and wasn't really looking forward to it, but it was surprisingly easy.

And a coupla weeks ago had to setup a printer for an old couple who just had an iPad and no PC/Mac. That was dead easy, set up the Kodak printer and then download the Kodak printing app on the iPad, job done!

I have the feeling that I ought to do some research into iPads as a customer yesterday asked me about how to transfer their photos onto their iPad. I wasn't sure, I guess you just do everything in the cloud.

I don't hate Apple stuff, in fact it's all pretty impressive for the average non-techie user. I wouldn't use it myself, I love my Windows and Android stuff and what I can do with it.
