Are there any free/cheap alternatives to LogMeIn Rescue? I've just finished a two week trial, and while it is very good for the purpose, the fees put it out of reach for me. Some kind of VNC perhaps?

Crossloop is ok, and you can definately use it for what you need. But I haven't found anything that comes close to LogMeIn Rescue in the free/open source world. We use LogMeIn Rescue for out remote work and I just love it.

If you are looking for an alternative to Logmein you could try OneClick by Advantig.
advantig.com/oneclick

It is based on UltraVNC and Single Click. There are free and paid versions.

I think it is easy to set up. You might have to forward a port on your router but not theirs, it works by reverse connection.

I have been using the paid version for about a year to remotely support clients and RELATIVES. I am very pleased with it, especially for XP.

Main problems I have with it are Vista related. It does not run as a service on Vista. Therefore, you can’t reboot and automatically have it reconnect Vista machines in safe mode or multi user logins – YET – the developer is working on that now.

How much does advantig cost?

I started using crossloop yesterday, it's pretty good, but disconnects when I try to resize the oversized clients display, it also has to go through the Connect/Approve process before it reestablishes the connection.

I would use logmein, but the password mgmt is a pain.

Advantig OneClick is free for personal use. Commercial use $45.00 lifetime , until 1/1/08, then $75.00 lifetime I think.

FREE -- Crossloop. I just used again last night with a complete computer neophite, and it worked great. Just tell the person on the other end to hit next about fore times and it is installed.

Another good alternative to all the expensive remote access tools on the market is Techinline Remote Desktop (techinline.com) I've switched from LogMeIn Rescue and now pay a fraction of what I used to pay, and my computer illiterate customers absolutely love the simplicity of connecting, which is a rarity. They also have a pay as you go plan which I also didn't see any other services offer

Looks interesting, I'll definately be giving this a try.

LogMeIn Rescue do a PAYG plan if you ask them. But to me it's still a bit pricey.

Does it have the same feature set as LogMein Rescue?

remote support software

try teamviewer, for times that i need to be able to access the clients computer without them being there i use log me in free, i wrote my own msi with some free utilitiies so that all they have to do is to download the software and click next until finished, then it points their pc to my logmein account. Let me know if you are interested in finding out more info.

Crossloop is a good free tool but it has some limitations. It disconnects too easily and there is no option to automatically reconnect on reboot.

However, you can't beat the price and you can install a widget on your web site so customers can request remote support directly from you. The Crossloop Marketplace also allows you to offer remote support services and generate revenue.

New option I dont see listed here

I just signed up to try out ShowMyPC.com

I tested it slightly Friday and expect to use this week.
They offer a free plan, a $14 plan and i chose the $19 per month plan as they provide the code to brand the links with my logo instead of theirs.

I will report back on how it goes.
Graystar

I didn't want to use crossloop as I wouldn't want my clients snooping over to that site looking for tech support.

If you really wanted to use LogMeIn Rescue (which is a fantastic product that personally I couldn't do without!!) but don't want to pay the monthly licence fee then you might want to consider PCMagical.com

These guys have combined LogMeIn Rescue with PayPal so you can charge people by the minute for doing remote support.

It was useful for me, and I hope this helps you.

Take care,

Dean
