Antivirus and Windows 10

Gunslinger has spoken before about not running AV software on Windows. Maybe he can surf the net safely and not get infected but most end users are dumber then dirt and easily fall in the traps that will get them drastically infected. I can't take any tech seriously who makes the claim that he recommend no antivirus software to end users. And frankly I don't fully believe it. And if that offends you Gunslinger. Too bad. You have a reputation for trolling which makes any statement from Antivirus to the weather suspect.

Windows 10 still has Defender, correct? Is it still as "meh" as ever? Or is MS going to actually start trying again with it?

I was running Panda 2014 and it just got thrown off during the upgrade to 10 without so much as a goodbye.
On trying to reinstall from the download link on "My Account" it fails: "Panda Antivirus Pro 2015 cannot be installed on this operating system."
Some work to do there then.....

According to Chris Hallum, a Senior Product Manager Operating Systems Group-Security, "our goal is to make Windows Defender a leading solution in the marketplace." Yeah, I had to replay that more than once to be sure I heard that comment correctly.

I didn't have the patience or interest to listen to the whole vid but from what I saw it appears MS is getting serious about system security.

I never bought into that post by the MS blogger, I can't remember her name, who claimed MSSE/WD was just basic protection. Everyone bailed on MSSE/WD after that comment. I still use it on all my PC's..

Time will tell if MS is really tired or embarrassed of being one of the weakest performers in the testing world.

I have to say that was a very interesting video, got lots of question and can't help thinking, If the good guys are doing this what's the bad guys doing, and that statement saying Windows Defender is well out of the top five but they going to make it one of the best.
Some of it went over my head and I will watch it again then it will stay in my head, In the UK most don't have a lot of time for Windows Defender
and know that's going to cause some comments, however I have never had any PC in that's had problems with Windows Defender on it, however that maybe because no likes it much.
It was certainty an eye opener thank you I enjoyed it.

I am still a Defender/MBAM Premium/MBAE free believer.

Firefox/Chrome with ad block plus properly setup.

I toss on a Ninite installer to keep the other stuff updated.

I teach users to scan all downloads with the virus total uploader tool that I also install.

We have installed Avira and Eset on windows 10 upgrades and they both worked fine. All win 10 updates have required an antivirus re--install no matter what was on it to begin with.

I've been running Avast AntiVirus and MBAM together for years now and can't
remember the last time I've been infected. I had a win 7 install on my workstation
from about 4 years ago until about 2 years ago that never got any nasties and then
went to the win 8 "tech preview or whatever it was called for 2 years and never
got any nasties from that either and then just a few months ago I went back to win 7
and have been happily chugging along no problem with Avast and MBAM.

I see no reason why the pair wouldn't be just as effective in win 10.

I just installed win 10 in my Thinkpad T420 and so far so good. The machine feels just
a bit faster, and well if anything else the new solitaire games are cool :p

Same here. I use Avast and MBAM and can't recall the last time I deal with an infection. Years ago.

Personally I like any security software which will not continually nag the user to upgrade the software - or throw up popups from lower-right corner of the screen. This is what I like(d) about MSE / Defender. But then they got such bad reputation(s) from the communities that we no longer suggest or install them.

Unfortunately I no longer have any say in what we do install on computers when we do a reload. So I just don't push it anymore.
