Norton Removal Tool – Remove the Norton Anti Virus Itself

Shares

Symantec has been dominating the computer security market for years now; their most popular offering being Norton Antivirus which is often pre-installed on new brand-name computers. Unfortunately Norton products tend to install themselves deep down into the critical parts of your system and if the product becomes damaged in some way you have a big problem.

I have seen it many times on computer repair callouts. Someone tries to remove the Norton product (which is usually the antivirus program) and it appears to uninstall, but next time they reboot the computer Norton presents an error message saying Norton couldn’t start because its missing a critical component. Of course it cant start properly because they just uninstalled most of its components expecting everything to be removed which leaves you with a crippled copy of Norton which wont uninstall.

This is where the Norton Removal tool comes in handy.

It is a small, easy to use executable that removes Norton products completely and isnt limited to just Norton Antivirus either, it can remove their other popular programs such as:

  • Norton AntiSpam 2004, 2005
  • Norton Antivirus 2003 through 2007
  • Norton Ghost 2003, 9.0 and 10.0
  • Norton GoBack 3.1 through 4.2
  • Norton Internet Security 2003 through 2007
  • Norton Password Manager
  • Norton Personal Firewall 2003 through 2007
  • Norton System Works 2003 through 2006
  • Norton Confidential Online 2007

Good article. We deal with businesses more than the home user, and found that when you have a problem uninstalling Norton Corporate Edition for one reason or another, that the NONAV tool works great.

NONAV removes the following products from filesystem/registry:
    NAV Norton Antivirus 4.x / 5.x
NAVCE Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition 7.0x 7.5x 7.6x
SAVCE Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition 8.0x 8.1x 9.x
    SSC Symantec System Center (from CE 7.x / 8.x / 9.x)
    AMS Alert Management System (from CE 7.x / 8.x / 9.x)
SCF Symantec Client Firewall 5.x 7.x

You can find an explanation of what NONAV does here: http://www.district6.org/files/software/NONAV/nonav.txt

Also you can download this free utility here: http://www.district6.org/files/software/NONAV.zip

    Santosh,
search within Dave Taylor’s website for Norton Removal. He’s got two significant pages with instructions which are handy.

Also, if you GOOGLE “uninstall Norton” you may notice other websites, like
    windowssecrets.com
    and PC Hell website.

I am just doing the same (almost) thing… uninstalling a full Norton product, and before doing so, looked up NO LESS THAN 6 websites with similar information, tips, hints, and links, as well as instructions for doing the removal.

I’m quite proud to note that 4 of my 6 links happen to refer to each other, so they all know they agree.

Mister Norton is (was?) a great guy, and Symantec, unfortunately, seems to have gone ahead and abused his good name by creating products that don’t remove themselves nicely according to the End User’s wishes… and I even notice that they don’t give the user the option of “exiting” or “quitting” the program once running…

.. not to mention the ALL TOO FREQUENT complaint about Norton products using TOO MUCH COMPUTER RESOURCES… primarily because LiveUpdate (LUcomm-whatever-it’s-called) sometimes multiplies itself many times and takes up lots of RAM in the process [sic]!

    Good luck.
Google, get your information and instructions, get many opinions, and proceed carefully.

    One last thing:
Look up the LOCKERGNOMES and Chris Pirillo.
GREAT links, tips and info there…
