ZIF/keyboard bad?

Situation:

I've got a recycled DV7-4285dx that keeps simulating an intermittent "page down" keystroke both before and inside Windows 7.

  • Bios has been reset to default
  • Bios is up to date (F.29)
  • Keyboard itself has been blown out with air
  • ZIF cable is intact and all other keys function perfectly

I've got a G6-1c62us keyboard that I tried plugging into the ZIF connection, but it does not detect it whatsoever. Are ZIF cables universal?

I just need to determine if I need to order just the keyboard or the frame as well. (The one with the frame is coming from China.)

Thanks for your time folks .

I dont think keyboards are universal if thats your question. I have tried swapping once and didnt work. Probably things like the scan rates are different and such on boards.

Does an external keyboard give you the same results?

I hate situations like this - Its either this device or the mainboard. Ill try a new keyboard before a mainboard :|

Ill put my money on the mainboard. Its 50/50 really with no real way to tell except an external keyboard.

Save yourself the misery and do not ever buy a keyboard that should have a housing/frame but does not. Those tiny holes in between the keys are for tiny "rivets" of plastic. You will not be able to secure the keyboard properly and trying to remove the keyboard from the frame will leave you with a sloppy disaster.

ps - keyboards (not the zif cables) are not universal. Even ones that look very similar are different enough to not even be detected. HP is probably the worst when it comes to this.

@coffee -- I did use an external USB keyboard and had zero issues with it. Seems like it's gotta be the keyboard itself.

@jimbo -- I suspected as much, but thanks for your insight regarding the frame!

The keyboard from China is only ~$10 on eBay from laptopaccessories201103 so I really don't have much to lose, and again, its a refurb project from a customer recycle so time really isn't a factor either.

On a side note, anyone ordered from that seller before, and if so, any issues?
