So, after seeing that these things are considered the best things since sliced bread, I decided to splash out on one and it just arrived today, along with a Crucial 128GB MX100 SSD to put in it - and it doesn't appear to be working

The SSD is formatted as just one NTFS partition but when plugging the Zalman into any USB port, the computer plays the 'USB device connected' sound and the Zalman's LCD lights up and displays "ZM-VE300" and that's it - nothing else happens, no matter how long I wait or how many times I push/lift/depress the jog wheel. Windows Explorer never sees the Zalman so I never get to 'Safely Remove' it, but on pulling the plug the computer plays the 'USB device disconnected' sound.

Any ideas folks?

Sounds like it isn't getting enough power.

Have you tried the 'Y' splitter mentioned in other posts? In addition, try plugging it into a different bank of USB ports that may have more power to them.

Andy

No I haven't Andy, purely because someone said that with an SSD a 'Y' splitter definitely wasn't needed. I'll see if I can get one from CPC tomorrow. Cheers

Hold the jogger wheel down and plug it in. It should go into hdd mode from memory. You won't need extra power with an SSD

Thanks Martyn but that didn't work either. Further messing about leads me to believe that it's the SSD at fault because I installed a 500GB 'traditional' drive and it appears to work alright with that. To further complicate matters, I don't know if it's a general incompatibility with the particular make and model of SSD or if the SSD is actually faulty.

I ran an extended test under GSmartControl and although it completed the test without errors, there does seem to be a problem as you'll see from the picture here http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q235/darkdoo/IMG_20150219_100215.jpg

As it is brand new, would anyone be taking this drive back as faulty or am I incorrectly interpreting the result?

I had exactly the same problem a couple of weeks ago, with a 256 GB MX100 model.

A short SMART test showed two unreadable sectors between the MBR and the start of the first partition. The drive worked fine on a PC, but the Zalman wouldn't have it. A replacement from Amazon is working.

Looks like a bad SSD.

RMA it.

It will run fine off your traditional drive while you get a replacement. Then just copy to the new SSD.

So, having got a replacement Crucial MX100 SSD and it having the exact same problem, I'm wondering if CPC have a faulty batch so I asked for a refund instead of a third replacement. I'm still intending to stick an SSD in the Zalman so any recommendations for decent ones folks?
