Hi, got in a old macbook pro (2010) the client did a upgrade and now its stuck in a boot loop at login screen. I booted to recovery and backed up his user folder and then tried to do a reinstall, it goes online to download yosemite then when I start the install I'm prompted for apple id and password, I click "forgot" and the little wheel just spins.... is there a way around this apart from doing a clean install?

First, I'd figure out a working Apple ID and password, preferably his. Go to https://appleid.apple.com to test or reset from another computer.

Then, boot with an Ethernet cable connected to the Internet. There's a terminal command you can use to set the date and time, make sure that it's correct. I've used that when I get errors about recovery server not able to be contacted. This might be similar.

Or you could try using an installer in a usb stick, it’s faster and doesn’t require you to use an Apple ID when installing
I've used the usb installer, but I didn't know if I could use it to reinstall without formatting, is it pretty clear pretty clear how to do that from it without wiping it?

Yeah, I've been tripped up by the date thing before, thanks for reminding me!

Yes you can reinstall or you can format, if you follow the installer it won’t ask you to wipe the hd, it’s not windows :P for you to wipe the hd you’ll have to go to “utilities “ and the then “disk utility”
