Got this DV6 in, I didn't observe this behavior before I took it apart since it was running extremely hot, I shut it down and took it apart. Problem is indicated as "virus".

So got it apart, heatsink is just clogged full, cleaned it out, put new thermal grease on cpu (HP dumped like a whole tube on there!)

Laptop looks like it was the victim of a liquid spill at some point in its life. It is about 3 years old.

So, now when the LCD gets turned off by windows (timeout) the backlight will flicker. Seemed to stop one time when I pressed near the video connector but it happens every time windows turns the monitor off.

Any ideas? Was hoping to get this damn thing out today!

Sounds like a weak CCFL. You've seen the lights in office buildings do that flicker when they are on thier last leg. You could always monitor the volts from the inverter during the process, see if it fluctuates or stays strong.

Or since you said you pressed next to the vga connector and it stopped it could be a bad cable or cable can be a bit loose.

Goggs, that is good info, but a bit outdated. I have a DV6 that runs windows 7 and has a core i5 CPU. It is still a total utter piece of garbage. (GPU failing)

As the DV6 series covers a lot of laptops, could you let us know if this uses a CCFL or LED backlight? (from the symptoms I am guessing CCFL)
