SO I had someone take a look at my SEO stuff. I was wondering if anyone would be interested in me making a new thread with just the low down dirty of SEO. Not saying it would make your site to the top 5 of google, but just stuff to help out. Of course someone could add to it later. But just a nice how-to help thread.

I would be extremely interested in such a site. I have a hard time with SEO and need to get my website out there. For some reason this stuff is just down right confusing to me.

Why do you need a 'special' thread?

There's a Forum Section specifically on this subject with any number of existing threads on the mechanics of SEO.

Probably not any use to people unless they read it before posting, kinda like a 'new', thread to re-discuss methods that are already discussed here...

..

Jim,

I spent a few hours trying to research many websites of SEO as you recommended. I then tried to search technibble specific questions to fill in the gaps I have after reading about five hours of web sites else where about designing a website, selecting the best TLN or whether that is even advisable if you already have a domain with your company name matched? and the search tool is of little help here.... I never did find what I was looking for. I did read bits and nicks of not helpful yet information that may have been over my head and not ready for yet as well as infomation from 2008 which might not be the latest.

For example my company name and domain name however clever I thought they were 15 years ago, do not contain any keywords in them.

35 of 37 top SEO experts say that the number one SEO technique is to have keywords rich in your domain name. So one assumes that if I could register

ComputerRepairKS.com

that would give me a leg up getting to the top of the organic search list...all things being equal for the keyword Computer Repair within KS.

But then maybe that is not really necessary but what they mean is that I can do it with my current www.currentdomainname.com/computerrepairks name although not a TLN is this still as helpful as www.computerrepairks.com?

Then the 2nd important thing seems to be Keyword rich title..simple enough. Computer Repair, Data Recovery, Virus Removal, Network Service....|CFI Computer Repair KS

Then A good list of Keywords to begin with. I have some marketing background nothing to do with websites so to me keywords would most likely be my services Computer repair; Laptop repair; Windows repair; virus removal; data recovery; data backup;(same as the title less the branding) and so on.

It is easy enough to find out that the first keyword is most important and the 2nd next..... AS well as not to exceed 70 characters in the title name (to be displayed) more can be searched by google....and that you can increase click through of your searches with a meta tag description 150-160 character in plain language description for your end user summary below your search resulted keyword.

So yes you can learn much of this stuff without asking for help but not yet know exactly what is the best snytax both for keyword or page title:

Computer_Repair; Computer repair; Computer_Repair?? Then some recommend not using commas but using Pipes so not to look like to google as if you are keyword stuffing.

I can see that it is important SEO technique to have Computer repair keyword in the domain name; title; then in headings, and text within the same page content of about 5-10% keyword use, as the title with that keyword, and even better to have called mp3, jpg ect named or alt name (whatever that means) with Keyword rich names so that it is obvious to google that everything on that page points too, describes, photos, sounds the same keyword topic.

Still there are some nits and picks which are not completely obvious. So please if you can help out, I clearly can use some guidance. I am not afraid to admit that I am as backward as a frog on this website stuff.

It doesn't look like anyone is going to help us so maybe we should just help ourselves and each other. At first glance, your sight is clean an professional looking.

your domain name doesn't include a keyword but it is clever none the less. You can increase search by adding keyword to your title as well as a heading and text under the heading of at least 5% containing the keyword. also footers are recommended.

I think best search results go to sites who do this and make each page focus on a single keyword. You do not mention computer repair on your page at all. So google interprets this as your content is not what you are advertising.

you have your 5th keyword virus removal listed but without a heading and not enough text.

Here is what I know and can help with. If you want more info on blogging for SEO, I wrote up some time ago this thread to help someone else out.

I have no clue how to SEO without blogging, but if you can create pages or put in these in the website code, it may work.

All pages, tags and blog titles should have keyword paragraphing in them to get your SEO "Base" down. Remember you are not doing (blogging) or SEO for decorative and network sharing purposes. So if you are blogging, people say they are worried that people will read it and wonder if they are promoting...yes you are and you probably don't have enough traffic to worry about that yet. After you set your blogs up for SEO, then create good blogs for your networks to read. And this is where you can massage your good paragraphs into new blogs and tagging, etc.

Computer Repair Rochester MN
Data Recovery Rochester MN
Virus Removals Rochester MN

You can do 2 towns too or add in zip codes.

Here is the last list of keyword parapgraphs I tested (I have spreadsheets full of these). I was on page 1 of all of these, now I tested today and see I am dropping for some but since I am changing my services, I'm ok with that drop so I can focus on new service paragraphs.

Data recovery services Minneapolis
Minneapolis Tech Support
Twin Cities*Tech Support
Computer repair minneapolis (I've dropped down I see here)
Minneapolis IT Support
Google Apps Minneapolis
data backup for Minneapolis
Technology Consulting Minneapolis
Business Technology Consulting Minneapolis
Hardware repair Minneapolis
how to offer remote assistance (page 7, up from page 13 Googlewide)
Google Apps for Business Minneapolis
Data transfer Minneapolis
Virus removal Rochester mn
Virus removal Minneapolis
icloud synching with outlook (page 3, Googlewide, this is good!)
cloud small business minneapolis

I work on paragraphing and keep tagging these in other blogs and use them for some pages too. Keeping them alive is key. If you stop massaging them, I found that your rankings drop. Remember your competition is doing the same thing or something like it.

Edited to add, my site has no computer words in it, but my main page is titled correctly to help SEO. I have also kept on with good SEO titles for the hottest pages that get hit on my site.

Technical support & computer repair for Minneapolis and Rochester, MN
Computer repair for the Twin Cities and Rochester, Minnesota
Information Technology IT Services for Minneapolis and Rochester MN

Hello Tony,

Thanks for the looksy at my webpage concerning SEO. I will work on making the changes this week and see if things improve for me.

Thanks!
coffee:)

Sorry guys, I haven't had a chance to sit down and transfer over the stuff. I will do my best to get it done ASAP.

And no blackhat type stuff. lol, just had two SEO reviews of my site, and I would like to share what they pointed out about my site, as they look about the same , more or less.

***WARNING: I don't know SEO from the next guy, so this is just a review of my site and what they told me to do. Maybe I had the wrong guy help, but use any tips at your own risk***

Here is some of it (He is of course talking about my site, which is still the same from when this report was done, but wont be for long as I plan to follow it):

What I would do here for backlinks to your site is this. Use variations on the keyword you want to rank for and other related keywords. With Google penguin updates if you keep using the same keywords (anchor text) repeatedly to a very high level in your backlinks you will 100% get penalized so you need to avoid this.

By anchor text I mean the keywords used in your backlinks. For example if you posted on a blog and used the words “computer repair st croix valley” and linked this back to your site this would be the anchor text.

By this I mean to target different versions of the keyword and long tail variations on the keyword. Just put your main keyword into the Google keyword tool and find related keywords to go for and then use keywords like click here, visit us, find out more and also use the site address in the anchor text as much as possible along with general keywords.

The key to this is to do what visitors to your site would do who know nothing about SEO and to make it look as natural as possible while doing enough to rank for this and other keywords.

Use as many long tail variations (keywords that are three or four words long or even longer) of your keywords as you can find and do not concentrate on just your main keyword.

With Google penguin the more keywords you use in your anchor text the better it is, as it looks natural and even using keywords like click here, visit us and even the site URL as anchor text will help a lot.

You also need to mix in keywords you are targeting with generic keywords and keep the targeted keywords at around 20% of the total anchor text in your backlinks.

Your backlinks should also be from as many different sites and sources as possible to look natural.

I would get backlinks for example from article directories, bookmarks, RSS submissions, blog comments etc. Google have devalued forum profiles so I would not put much effort into them. The more diverse the better as it looks natural and if you follow this for your backlinks I can tell you 100% you will not get penalized by Google and will move upwards.

The more diverse your backlinks are the less chance you have of being affected if Google make any changes and discount one type of backlink source, they have done this many times in the past.

*** I would also avoid sending too many backlinks to the home page of the site. They should go to different pages randomly. Google has come down really hard on sites that send all, or the majority of the backlinks to the home page and I have seen lots of sites penalized really hard for this as Google considers this unnatural link building. I would target other pages and articles on your site randomly as this is what Google are looking for.

Social media

One other thing I would do is to start making a lot of posts on Facebook and Twitter.

Google are using social media as one of the factors to determine rankings and I would take advantage of this and start using both Facebook and twitter heavily to promote your site.

Site promotion Plan

How do you put all this together?

I would do the following.

#1 Write articles several times a week. Ensure these articles go on your site and get indexed.

#2 Write additional articles and put these up on article directories, including articesbase.com, ezinearticles.com and goarticles.com

This list here is constantly updated of the best places to submit to by traffic and I would use the sites in here. http://www.vretoolbar.com/articles/directories.php

#3 To help your articles to get indexed bookmark them and also bookmark articles on your site. Currently bookmarking is effective with Google but this always changes. Do not submit bookmarks by hand use a tool to do it or get someone on Fiver to do it as it is very time intensive.

#4 Write articles or spin them very well at least three times a week and submit these to good web 2.0 properties. Since the panda and penguin updates submitting content to these types of sites has proven to be very effective. There is a list attached with this report called list of web 2.0

#5 Get backlinks from different sources as detailed above to your site and also to your articles. There is no point in just banging out a constant stream of articles and hoping for the best. Backlink to them as well and do this every day if you can If Google picks up a ton of backlinks one day and none for a week this will flag your backlinks. You need to keep the building backlinks at a constant and consistent level and rate.

#5It’s possible to rank a Facebook page for your keywords as well and I would craft content on it around your main keywords and post to it daily if possible.

#6Using the method mentioned earlier I would also create videos and post on YouTube for backlinks and traffic.

#7 Write press releases and submit them. I would do this several times a week to start with. Even using free press release sites like prlog.com can bring in good results and it is easy to just take articles you have written and convert them into a press release.

#8 Since you want to rank locally I would also do this.

Go here.

http://getlisted.org/enhanced-business-listings.aspx

then just put the keyword in followed by state or area name.

once you have gone there just click fill in the keyword and zip code then go to the box ringed in red and find places to get citations from

Then go here
http://www.yext.com/

and sign up for the small business listing.

then go here. https://www.whitespark.ca/local-citation-finder/ and sign up for any package you like.

Finally go here. This site is very good http://www.brightlocal.com/seo-tools/citation-tracker/ and lets you spy on where the competition is getting their citations from as well.

You could probably get away with using a couple of these sites I have listed here. This is extremely effective for local SEO.

and a touch more:

I would target these keywords in the following order
#1 computer repair st croix vally
#2 computer services st croix valley
# Computer repair woodbury
computer sales service MN

Onsite optimization

Your site title reads like this.

<title>House Call Computer Services in All of St. Croix Valley | Contact</title>

I would use a title that reads like this

<title> computer repair st croix valley | computerqualit.com </title>

The title tag should contain your main keywords at the front of the tag and your site name like this. Google does not read this beyond 70 characters so I would use this.

Your description tag on the site reads like this

<meta name="description" content="Computer Repair and Maintenance Services for Home or Business. Affordable IT Services for you! Remote/In-House/Fast turn around! Call (651)300-4899 today!" />

I would change it to something like this.

<meta name="description" content="Computer Repair st croix valley. Maintenance and computerServices for Home or Business. Affordable IT Services for you />

Google does not count over 160 characters in the description and this will get your main keyword in there.

The keywords tag is not important. Google has not used it in over three years but if you put too many keywords in it you will get penalized for keyword stuffing.

I would change it from this.

<meta name="keywords" content="Computer Service, Repair, Fix Computer, Support, Repair Company, Fast Help, Tech Problem, hudson, Stillwater, Stillwater data recovery, hudson Guru, computer repair, delivery, in home, house call, virtual, visit, come here, local best buy, google, geek squad, virus removal, pc, lost files, sony, dell, ibm, hp, compac, yelp, best, desktop, laptop, replace, wireless, wired, network, office, remote, service, customer, client, user, greenfield, indianapolis, new palestine, fortville, mccordsville, giest, fishers, greatdealsmagazine, facebook, fan, page, router, switch, server, microsoft, windows 7, xp, vista, xp pro, linux, cat5, screen, lcd, computerrepairexpert, broken, keyboard, mouse, motherboard, power, supply, hard, drive, cd, dvd, camera, scanner, monitor, back up, software, outlook, word, excel, website, developer, graphics, vidoe, card, pci, express, agp, bus, cpu, chip, bios, intel, amd, asus, toshiba, compaq, dimension, inspiron, optiplex, acer, linksys, belkin, netgear, cisco, brother, lexmark, lenovo, bsod, blue, of, death, ram, memory, file, floppy, driver, reload, operating, system, A+, +, mcp, mcsa, certified, technician, deployment, refresh, active, directory, IIs, repairman, geek, fry's, electronics, iphone, blackberry, droid, ipad, mac, apple, imac, restore, configuration, defrag, clean, boot, os, fix, work, Sales Service MN, online Parts Store Minnesota, Store, Web Design, Laptop Sales, PC" />

To this

<meta name="keywords" content="Computer Service, computer repair services, computer repair st croix valley " />

Content

With the Google panda updates it is vital to keep the content updated on your site. Even big corporate sites I have worked with have been hit for not updating content frequently enough and you need plenty of written content where possible.

What I would do is this. I would write articles or get them written and craft them around keywords you want to rank for this will make it easier to get ranked for various different keywords. By this I mean use the keywords once in the title and a couple of times in the article body and generally they should be over 400 words in length and create a blog on the site like this https://www.computerqualit.com/blog and post on it at least once a week.

This will keep the search engines crawling your site and help with your rankings as well. I cannot overstate how important this is with the latest Google penguin and panda updates.

The latest Internal Google quality guidelines for are looking for the following

High Quality Pages – These are useful, satisfying and helpful for the purpose of the website and its content. This would include content that shares videos, pictures or social media; share opinions and interact with visitors; provide personal or social information; has questions and answers posted; as well as shares downloads or files with the public.

This interaction is what Google wants to see and I would try to do this as far as possible on your site and allow user comments and interaction but moderate it or you will get overrun with spam.

I would also create a YouTube channel ( I could not see one) and put content up. If possible I would put a good description on each video (this is important), put your URL at the top of the YouTube description box (it must use http in front of the www on YouTube to be clickable so people can see it right away and click on it and use keywords you want to rank for in the title and in the description. Very much like you would do with an article and I would also use keywords you want to rank for in the tags for the videos as well. Doing this will rank videos for keywords you want to get to rank for.

You can easily put up slideshow type videos with details of the services you offer and about common computer problems.
