Word Docs missing content after virus removal.

A high profile customer brought in a Dell Inspiron/Windows 8 riddled with viruses. Ran virus removal tools as usual and was able to get rid of them. However now customer cant open any Word Docs. Error window says "File cannot be opened beacuse there are problems with the contents." When I click on details tab it says " The file is corrupt and cannot be opened." My boss and other techs have tried recovery softwares, restoring to earlier restore points, but to no avail. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Reinstall or Repair Microsoft Office? Or, have you tried to see if LibreOffice or Open Office is able to open the files?

Are you certain the files are intact? There are several versions of Crypto Locker out there that encrypt files. If you are lucky, assuming my theory is correct, you may be able to use volume shadow copies and recover past copies of the files.

yep....sounds like Cryptolocker to me too..

But did you pay any attention as to which viruses were being found and removed and, if not, why not?

I know there are some viruses out there that will target word document files as well. I encountered one a few weeks ago.

Unfortunately I did not. Will definitely keep that in mind for now on.
