This one is confusing, a client was having an issue installing an update for his computer I believe it was SP2, i know, that was a long time ago, it turns out the client's computer is XP Home Edition, but it's being reported as XP Pro, he even showed me the article online telling him how to change it to say XP Pro.

So i'm stucked with how to get it to change back, or am i just better off doing a re-install.

SP2 had a nice little feature built into it that made it very difficult, if not impossible, to install on systems using non-legit Pro licenses. If the system is reading as PRO but has a HOME product ID...that is likely the problem. This kind of thing will also throw WGA into a fit if they try to use Windows up-date.

If it were me, I'd make sure the customers HOME license is legit and reinstall Windows.

Id also like to see this article you mentioned....

I tried to undo the changes and got a message saying that I was tampering with the license which wasn't allowed, but ether way, that's key removed and it's still saying Pro, so it does look like a re-install will be needed, makes me wonder why a person would even try to do that for in the first place.

Yep...I have no doubt that this probably started all the trouble and that these reg hacks are at the heart of the problem...and God knows what other registry values have been messed with.

This is one of those rare occasions when formating is actually your best bet...and probably the quickest solution.

Jm Boyd, thanks, I was hoping that I wouldn't have to, lucky the customer still has his restore CD, so I'll get that process started.

Yes and no...It is only a "Registry Setting" that gets changed and shows xp-pro...I reality its still Home ;)
