I got a laptop in the other day. said there was some virus thing
going on and she informed me some guy had burned a cd and installed
windows on it and they wanted it back the way it was ...

someone had installed windows 7 ultimate on it and the sticker on the bottom
that has the product key is worn out so all I can read is the product key

I am not sure what the original OS is I know its windows 7 but not what version

what my question is ... is there any place to find out what version the OS is
from the product key.

here is the label

Have a look back over the last couple of weeks, I'm sure this was discussed.

My MSDN account has a ton of downloads that begin with X##-####.img (Yeah, you would think they would use .iso like everyone else, but they don't).

I didn't find this specific one in MSDN, but I did find this:

X15-53758 is just the SKU code for Windows 7 Home Premium.

What you probably needs is the Original, HP OEM Win 7 Home Premium Media... That product key should work with that.

forgot to mention

I forgot to mention yes I tried to do a restore back to
factory settings but the guy whom installed the OS
wiped the drive so there is no factory partition that I can use

thanx for that info I will try it out ... I just didn't want to get a copy of
home, pro, premium, and try each one to figure it out

Oops , my earlier suggestions gets you nowhere if you only have a product key. The link provided in phaZed's posting helps you better.

Another tip: the HP sticker has useful info too. On the HP support page you can enter the HP product number and this will get you here. You'll find that this laptop had Win 7 Home Premium x64 on it originally ;)

I find it amazing that Microsoft are allowed to get with the poor quality of their certificates of authenticity, not coating them with some form of protective layer. I know Sony do this for them but surely Microsoft should do this anyway (similiar to the old days of XP).

More revenue I suppose...
