I just got a dell Optiplex 745 running windows XP to clean up and tune up. After cleaning out all the dust and everything else, applied thermal paste to the processor, clean RAMs etc, and power on looking for everything to work well, well, it did until I inserted my external hard drive to finish the tune it freezes, but as soon as I push the power button it shuts off very fast.

As this ever been recorded before by anyone? I couldn't find the exact issue in the forums. Thanks.

It sounds like the drive USB cable/bridge board/PCB is shorted. Does it shut down other computers when the external drive plugged into them? Do other USB devices cause the customer's computer to also shut down. If so, check the USB port for damaged pins or USB cable being plugged into the wrong motherboard header. I had the latter happen when I plugged the USB cable into a header that had 12v on it and only figured it out after blowing a couple of USB flash drives.

Does it present the same issues without your drive present?

What type of drive is it?

Is this the onboard usb ports or add on ports?

I've seen drive compatibility problems cause system lockups in the past, though I'm not sure about USB ones.

It could be any of many things, and it's not worth the time to track it down.

Hello everyone.

After that issue, i tried the same thing again, but nothing happened and I got to finish the tune up, and there was nothing unusual anymore, so think it was maybe because it was just cleaned up. But that's the first time seeing anything like that, freezes then as soon as the power button is pressed it turns off immediately. Thanks everyone. Peace.
