Windows 8 the most unintuitive OS to date

Define and enumerate

This thread has some people making the statement that Win 8 is intuitive. I'm just curious. In what way is it intuitive? How are you defining intuitive?
I have to admit I haven't given it much time. I put it on a VM and played around a little with the Metro UI. I got lost a little. Seemed like a great OS for a tablet. I'm not sure how to approach it as a desktop OS. Is the desktop OS dead?

You know that no matter how badly it sucks there will always be those people telling us how great it really is. Vista is a prime example. It sucked, everyone knows it sucked, but still you had those few who would argue for it just to be different.

You all seriously need to stop exagerating. I ran Windows 8 and it was extremely easy to pick up even in its unfinished stages. Navigating the menus was nowhere near as complicated as many people are making it out to be. The desktop environment is basically the same as Windows 7 and the Metro UI is far from confusing; if you can't overcome the 5-10 minute learning curve you have no business on a computer.

  ...that is all.

Windows 8 actually does a great job of bringing together all the features; integrating emails, apps, etc. Also bringing together tablet and desktop functionality was genius; the accessibility of tablets is what makes them so alluring; desktops never had that before windows 8. Microsoft understands that... what windows 8 is doing is taking "gadgets" and "apps" and integrating them into the OS, which was the entire point from the beginning before tablets were even relevant. They were just never really expanded on in Windows Vista and were dropped in windows 7. Despite of all that the desktop is still relatively unchanged; the task manager is changed, the explorer now uses the "ribbon" another feature that i think is genius.

I find it funny how everyone here is comparing Windows 7 to Windows Vista although they are virtually the same operating the system except for a few minor improvements. Many of the improvements over Windows Vista was the compatibility. The hardware needed at the time to run Windows Vista just wasn't there. The hardware that many manufacturers were stocking shelves was just not enough. I can not tell you the amount of Vista PCs I saw packed with 1-2 gbs of ram. The hardware caught up by the time Windows 7 came out; hence why it seems far more stable and higher performaing..

I respect your opinion. Microsoft is clearly trying to make a presence in the tablet market, which is all good and well, but they are trying to mimic Apple and I believe they're in for a rude awakening. I think that Windows 8 will make a decent tablet OS, but why even consider a Windows 8 tablet when you could use an iPad? In your last post you could take "Windows 8" and replace it with the word Apple, iPad, or iOS and what you wrote would describe what Apple has already done. You speak of integrating apps and gadgets into the desktop, well the Macbook Pro (and basically all of Apple's other computers) already does this. My point here is this...people will buy Windows 8 and use it, whether on a desktop, laptop, or tablet, but Microsoft is clearly playing a game of copy cat catchup. Apple is far ahead of them in this race and I believe that it will stay this way. Windows 7 is my favorite OS to date and it makes me angry (can't you tell? :D) that M$ is trying to "fix" something that isn't broken.

Well hey, better late then never lol. I have the latest mac os running on my mac mini and I can honestly tell you that Lion is not all its cracked up to be; the app integration on mas oc needs work as well. Something about it just feels clunky. As far as playing "copying" goes it's the entire reason that technology is where it is now.

Before this turns into a mac vs windows debate

Windows: Getting S*** done
Mac: Does a great job of doing nothing much.

Linux guy here. None the less, I am not even going to comment on that statement, you will get plenty of flaming from everyone else.

Agreed. I was not trying to spark the Mac vs. Windows debate...I am a Windows man myself. I just started to learn how to use Apple devices because I would like them to be one of the many devices/platforms that I support. I am just miffed at M$ because I have an iPad 3 and I can see that (in my opinion) Windows 8 tablets will not even come close. But I have yet to see...I guess I shouldn't count the chickens before the eggs hatch. Lol. Don't get me wrong, I will support Windows 8 on tablet, laptop, or desktop. I will roll with the punches.

As far as Linux goes, I would really like to become more familiar with it because I see the value there. Powerful. It is on my (incredibly long) list of things to do/learn.

You gotta support it from an IT perspective, thats just business. But I would never suggestion that any get a Windows Tablet unless Microsoft completely rewrites their Kernel and adds a completely different permissions system.

Honestly.. Im using Windows 8 right now and once you get over the fact that using the "windows" button actually benefits the OS and adds to the experience you will see how free flowing and painfully simple Windows 8 is.. You hit the windows key metro opens you navigate the metro ui, go to where you want, drag it to the side, it sits there, hit the windows button again, desktop opens... it's just very smooth and well executed. You all just need to give it a chance. Instead of "omg its new.. I give up"

Sidenote: ie10 is awesome

...at allowing malware to do it's job whilst providing little to no resistance!

Why would you want it to provide resistance, what we don't need is an OS or browser asking us for a confirmation with every last thing that we are doing. And viruses keep many techs relevant and it sells billions of dollars in AV programs, giving millions of people jobs. Its also not as easy to get viruses as people make it out to be.. I actually sat down one day and tried my very best to load my computer with viruses and was only able to pick up about 3 or 5. I can count the amount of times that I've gotten a virus on my computer on one finger.

Secret To Not Getting Viruses
Stay off porn sites
Stay away from keygens, serial key generators, cracks, etc
Only use reliable torrent sites
Don't click on links that promise a free iPad 3. No one gives out ipads
If your the "one millionth" visitor on a site backspace off it.
Etc Etc all common sense

Getting viruses on your computer is usually a result of being stupid or going somewhere you didn't need to be; doing something that you didn't need to do.

I wouldn't. I have had FF and Chrome warn me that I was getting ready to visit a site that is known to host malware...I have never seen IE do this.

You're preaching to the choir on this one.

Exactly...and most people that get viruses on their computer have no common sense or knowledge of safe browsing practices. To me, using IE to browse web pages is a little like going to battle without any armor...painted blaze orange (IE is still by far the most widely used browser so it's no surprise why malware authors target it the hardest). To sum up today's debate between you and I, I am going to use Windows 8 and inevitably IE 10 myself in the process of learning the ins and outs of them well enough to support them. With that said, I will encourage my customers to go with (choice of OS) what they feel the most comfortable using. Being that tablets are becoming more and more popular, if a customer of mine asks my opinion about what they should do/buy/use (and I know they will) as an OS, I cannot recommend Windows 8 when I know that there are other products out there that will give them a much better experience, without running a high risk of contracting viruses.
