Hey guys,
well, i never thought windows 8 would be such a pain in the butt lol
I have a customers dell laptop hear Model Inspiron 3520

and they seam to forgot there windows 8 log on password.. now I have tried 3rd party programs, Offline NT Password and Registry Editor, safe mode (no admin shows up)

and I'm quickly running out of options I can think of..
so I'm going to see if anyone of on here might have something i can try.. they don't have any kinda cd/usb password recovery disk

and for some reason when I try using Offline NT Password and Registry Editor, it cannot find windows it can see the HDD but there is no number associated with it for me to select it. and any 3rd party programs I use its like the HDD doesn't even exist.
so if I don't have any luck.. best thing I can tell them is .. call dell .. lol

any help guys I would be every grateful

P.S. I'm definitely sticking to 7 for a while :P

If the user account is a Microsoft Live account and not a local account, you should be able to reset the password probably from live.com somewhere... Once the password is reset you can login normally from the login screen provided the PC has an active internet connection when you try login.

Yes as usual FoolishTech is correct.

Go here
https://account.live.com/password/reset

I'm not sure why Offline NT Password and Registry Editor didn't work BUT,
I would also give TRK a go. Use a USB boot app program like YUMI or burn to DVD and use.

Doing a google will find you many tutorials on how to do this. Theres good ones on youtube as well.

Regards,

I truly am missing the days of 7 and xp lol
I guess its all around the same, just have to wait for all this software to catchup with the os

thank you again

Glad you got it working.

A quick search on Kon-boot leads me to believe that the commercial version does work with windows 8. According to the Kon-Boot website it does work with windows 8 (standard bios mode only)

I read this a couple of times and just realized what a freaking mess MS has turned something as simple as a booting up your computer. So far I have not experienced this with Win8 but if its really come to where we have to go to MSLive, change a password and then hope we have internet access to login to our computer we are really screwed.

Also don't forget that when installing Win8 on the first run, when you create a user account by default it will use an MS Live account unless you change it - if you just click next, and most EVERY end user will, you are going to see more and more live accounts on Win8 boxes.

Yeah, I remember doing that when I setup my test Win8 machine. I guess its time for me to start playing with this MS Live nonsense so I can be ready to make more money, I mean fix more computers, when they come in with this issue. :p

Anyone tried using Dart to fix this type of issue? Not at home so can't try on a test rig to see if it will work on a Live account, I expect it on work on a local account set up.

Ok so what happens if your Windows 8 pc doesn't have internet access and you forgot your password.

I can see some broke college student infect the computer so bad it can't get on the internet anymore. He can't fix it so he just lets it sit for 3 months until he cries to his parents and gets some cash only to not remember the password. So he resets it. But if the network stack on the system is hosed how can he gain access? (Or for that matter we?)

Use another pc with net access,? If it is a live account

No you don't understand. Let me walk you through it. Your PC gets infected so bad it is unable to make an internet connection.

Then you forget the password.

You get online on a working PC and change it.

But how does your infected PC know that? If you use your new password the pc will reject it because it doesn't know you changed it for it can't get on the internet to get the updated new password. It can only use the original password that it has cached in it's system and you have forgotten it.

assuming safemode w/ networking works then it in theory would work, if that doesn't work, then hardcore editing of the registry may fix it in a live environment, worse case nuke and pave

You recover data and N&P. Simple and effective - more money for you as well because I'm sure you charge more for the service.

Nick, can you merge that into the next D7? Specifically for Offline use?

Thank you, you really are the man when it comes to software

Thanks guys! (Just curious, did anyone actually run the tool?) :D
