Windows 8.1 Download link

Thanks for posting this link.

Removing that start button and trying to reinvent Windows had to be the stupidest thing I've ever seen MS do.

You must have overlooked Microsoft BOB and Smart Personal Objects Technology. :p

This is just a preview ? Without me having to do any digging do you know when it will come out full, how will we get it and will it cost anything to uprade from 8.0 ?

Last I heard Microsoft was going to provide it as a free upgrade via the online app store. There was talk it was going to be a paid upgrade but the mass disinterest in Windows 8 prompted the change. Don't expect this to be a gang buster either.

Microsoft BOB was awesome! I spend hours on it as a kid. That and Sim Farm were pretty much all I used a computer for...

so... dudes... dudettes... whats the like, low-down, on the, like, 'new' improved shinier W8?

Is it worth the download?

Will it give me giggles? jollies? other sensory/experiential pleasures?

Tell...........

Seriously!!! Please let me know if it is worth the download or not. I am, personally, satisfied with my W8 install since I have had time to learn all the key oats shortcuts. The search function is a major improvement for me as a technician. I can get to what I want a lot faster with less clicks. However the tile interface is obliviously broken. Interested to see the changes is 8.1

Does a good job of outlining the changes. The Start tile menu can be organized better and it is easier to get to the all apps feature. You can make any wallpaper the background for it and The Start BUTTON is back on the desktop but it still calls up that tiled crap and this breaks most start menu replacements.

You can organize the tile metro apps better and you CAN boot directly to the desktop but it is still Windows 8 and it still sucks in my opinion.

Yeah... the infamous missing Start button.... It's back indeed but man what a disappointment when it took me to the tiles  "Talking about the Start screen: Microsoft has added quite a few new features to it to improve its usefulness. It’s now much easier to rearrange apps (including multiple apps at the same time), and app tiles can now be both larger and smaller than before. You can also select animated backgrounds for the Start menu (which are actually pretty cool) or choose to use the same background for your desktop and the Start screen." (Quote is part of a very decent review on Techcrunch.com).
Booting to desktop is there indeed and very easy to set. Overall it feels like a preview and not all software is working on it. Better wait for the final version. I do think they're somewhat on the right track though.

Another reason to wait: you can't upgrade this version to the final version  So if you don't want to reinstall, wait.

I haven't decided whether I'll try it or not. I can tell you that if you choose to do so, INSTALL IT IN A VM SESSION!!. Do not "upgrade" your production machine. It's not clear yet, but I can guarantee you will have to re-install all your programs other than Store apps (and I'm not sure about them) when you choose to install the "Gold" code in the Fall.

Indeed this is a beta and things may change between now and final release. I would NOT run this on a production machine. A spare test system or a VM is fine.

Not bothering messing with 8.1 to be honest. I got the old start button myself and i'm now used to it, and my record with Microsoft updates is shocking at best so i'm staying well away until it's a final, non buggy version.

I'll skip the beta and I'll install the final only if Classic Shell comes up with a "delete crappy start button" option.

I'm sure that's the situation, Mark but it begs the question, "Why even bother installing it if you're using Classic Shell?"

Unless it's including any other hotfixes, I'm not seeing much reason to recommend it to anyone for whom I've already installed it.

You may not have much choice. It is likely to be released for free as a service pack. So everyone will automagically be upgraded to it.
