You’re not being rude. My needs may be different than yours. Being inquisitive makes us better techs. But I think 2 minutes is an exaggeration. LOL

Thanks for explaining that, i understand your method now. FYI 2 minutes is no exaggeration. Approx 1 min to boot in via PE, launch regedit change key and reboot. I have done this many times, and im finding that given the exact problem discussed origially in this post there is not so much a " profile" corruption rather that a windows screwup. I know of many cases where i have used this fix and their still working with no issues a year later

I've had a slew of these recently.
I found that just booting in safe mode and doing a system restore fixed all but one. ..or at least it fixed the profile issue. Still had to do loads of clean up / virus removal work once that was done.

The one it didn't fix had virus issues that turned off and removed all restore points.
In that case I did it long hand as posted earlier.

What do you do when all the profiles (built in admin and a single user account) are having the same problem as the OP mentioned, along with any new user accounts you create exhibit the same problem? Also, the only user that was on the machine has had all of its folders and files deleted in such a fashion that even the best of data recovery tools can't even find any fragments of the user's files.

I've used the method set out in the first part of http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947215. This is pretty much the same as the method set out in an earlier post where the .bak extension is removed from one registry folder and added to another in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList. The knowledgebase article also recommends changing the values of "RefCount" and "State" to zero in the folder without the .bak.
I use the registry editor in DaRT or Active@ BootDisk to make the changes.
