Hi to all,

Have I got one for all of you to think about.

I am currently working on a clients Compaq Presario CO61-319 TX, running Windows 7 Home Premium. The initial problem was the Windows Recovery virus that hi-jacked her system. I managed to get rid of that fairly easily and all was running well. I then noticed that there were quite alot of Windows Updates that that were ready to be installed, so I proceeded to install them. I then restarted, and to my surprise the system went straight to the F8 options menu. Not thinking much of it, I chose to start Windows normally. The drivers started to load and then bang! straight back to F8 options. I then attempted to reboot to every possible option with no success, and yes I did disable auto reboot, but nothing. The frustrating part was there were no hints to what the problem was. No blue screen no status messages, absolutely nothing.

I then loaded the Windows 7 install disk and tried start up repair 3 times to no avail. I then started all routine checks (HDD, Memory, System Restore) etc. but all was good. Then tried the MSDART tools, fix mbr, fixboot and a complete rebuildbcd using bootrec.exe. After all these checks, miraculously I had my first indcation of the problem.

A missing or corrupt driver
Windows\System32\drivers\hdufjwqf.sys
Status: 0xc0000098

Googled this driver and got absolutely no results.

The crazy thing about this driver is that I cannot locate it in any other Windows 7 installation. I checked 4 other Windows installations (2 home premium, 1 pro and one ultimate) travelling the same path.

After hours of frustration, I thought I would try something out of the norm. I loaded UBCD4WIN and followed the path to the problem driver. I then renamed the driver, only changing the last letter from an f to a k. I then rebooted and to my astonishment the OS started normally.

I was stoked that it had worked, so I then started a little clean up when I noticed something wasn't right. There seemed to be missing folders. No Accessories folder, an empty Administrative tools folder. I thought WTF, I was starting to lose my mind.

I then ran sfc /scannow and it stated that it had found files that could not be repaired by the System File Checker tool.

And this is where I hit a massive brick wall. To try and see the missing files, I tried many variations of the following command lines.

findstr /C:"[SR] Cannot repair member file" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >sfcdetails.txt. Supplied by Microsoft and various other websites.

I left out and changed various objects in the command line so that I could locate the sfcdetails.txt to reinstate these files, but once again nothing.

Sorry for the long & dramatised thread, but any help would be greatly appreciated.

Propatech...

P.S I did try many other checks, but they would have been to much to mention.

that file is a virus, notice the randomness? What did you do to remove the virus?

I would run combofix, it should solve the problem.. It sounds like you didnt remove it all the way.

Windows 7 driver

Thanks for your reply,

No wonder I could not find that file in any other Windows 7 OS. I have run AVG full version, Malware bytes and Super Anti-Spyware, with obviously no success.

I will give combofix a go.

Thanks heaps for all your help. I will reply if your advice helps.
