Windows 7 backup on Windows 10 error (0x80070002)

I have a number of residential clients who were using Windows 7 backup on a schedule to minimize the risk of encryption viruses. I would set them up to back up weekly and tell them to keep their external drive disconnected except for when the backup was actually in process. This was a good system, providing both a weekly file backup and an image in case everything went south.

Windows 10's native File History doesn't create an image and wants the drive to be attached at all times. Windows 7 backup is still an option on Windows 10 systems, however I have recently tried to set it up for a scheduled backup on three different client machines and gotten the same error on all three: The system cannot find the file specified. (0x80070002)

I've searched, found a lot of people with the same error but not found an answer. Anybody else run into this and found an easy solution? Or is Windows 7 backup just DOA on Windows 10?

Personally I've not seen this. But I'm not surprised about that issue. There is a big difference between 7 and 10. Why not give Easeus Todo Free a try? Works pretty good and the price is right for consumers.

No I've set it up on Windows 10 for customers also. I usually put a shortcut on the desktop, and tell them to open it and press Backup Now after plugging in the external drive. Mostly these are clean installs of Windows 10 (e.g. new computers or after failed HDD).

I have, however, seen the "Backup & Restore (Windows 7)" feature fail to open after upgrade from Windows 7 to 10 (can't remember the error code). Maybe your cases are Windows 10 upgrades, in which case the only fix I know of is a clean install of 10.

I'm thinking about setting that up, or Macrium Reflect free. However, I've already got the Windows 7 backup set up and a shortcut on the desktop for 2 systems, and it's easier to not have to retrain the client, if I can find an easy solution. If not it's a third party solution.

Not willing to do a clean install over this, too much effort. Clients are looking for what should be a simple function that Windows used to provide, the ability to perform a backup on a regular schedule vs. keeping a disk plugged in at all times. Sigh, thanks Microsoft!

Yeah, I saw that link, but didn't find it terribly helpful. However, I haven't run Windows Repair All-in-One - have a system here with the problem so will try it tonight. I think it's interesting I came across this issue with not one, not two, but three systems this week.
