Windows 10 Installs no longer have option for local account?

I'm still sort of wondering why there's push back on Microsoft on this...

Has anyone here tried to use an Android or iOS device without respective Google or Apple accounts?

Because my computer is not my phone and except for keeping my BitLocker key online a M$ account has ZERO positive benefit unlike a Google or Apple account which does have considerable benefits.

Except everything you just said is incorrect, Windows 10 has core functionality that doesn't work without the Microsoft account, just like your phone. For that matter, why isn't it your phone?!? It can be...

Know that I'm telling myself this just as I'm telling you, but the refusal to use a Microsoft Account on a Windows device is just us screaming bah humbug.

I prefer to use local accounts too... I don't like the idea of a machine that's useless without Internet access. But I also HATE being forced to log into my mobile devices too.

Other than BitLocker and the Microsoft Store what exactly does the Microsoft account do for me? What core function doesn’t work?

The entire Windows Store ecosystem for one, which allows for command line installation and updates to all sorts of crap we do manually because we're Luddites?

Though largely you're right, you can fuddle through without the online login, or better use that login in individual apps to make everything work. The experience just isn't as polished.

The store is the big one though, which is the same reason why Apple and Google force the issue on their platforms. But you see, on their junk stuff is so locked down you can't really get software any other way. Microsoft would probably like to do that too...

But that just brings be right back to the draconian nightmare we've all accepted on the part of Google and Apple being the real issue.

Funny thing is, you really need to log into your Apple ID on a Mac, or it will nag you into oblivion. And the lack of need to log into a Microsoft account on a PC has always seemed like a good difference to me. Yes, there are advantages to a Microsoft account if you want to use cloud options. But truthfully, why does anybody need to be logged into any cloud account to surf the web or do their taxes? A PC is a tool, and for my home users, there is really little advantage to a Microsoft account log in. However, I don't object to Microsoft encouraging users to do so. I object to them literally hiding/taking away the option to not do so.

I don't think this discussion is about whether to own a Microsoft Account. It's about whether the Microsoft Account should be used for computer login.

All apps that require a MSA will still work if you don't switch to MSA computer login (including OneDrive). Windows will still manage your MSA and even password if wanted, so there's no need to re-enter the MSA when starting to use an app that needs it. And the app remembers it after the initial launch too.

I've used local account logins only since Win8 was released, and as far as I know the only feature I miss out on is synced personalisation settings. I don't use those much anyway, apart from setting a theme or background picture.

Offline option only for Pro, Education, and Enterprise versions for windows 10 there is a work around for home just don`t connect internet or account and click on local account if you are logged in to ms account.

Yes, that's fine for us and we understand it and do it. But what about the typical end user. As part of the setup process, Microsoft asks you to connect to your network. You don't have the option to say no, just to say "i don't have internet access". And, if you are savvy enough to actually do that, Microsoft then asks if you are sure, because the setup process will go oh so much better if you are connected to the internet.

It's just plain old misleading and deceptive, and shouldn't be practiced by one of the most powerful corporations in the world. I believe the name for this is dark patterns.

Since they still offer 32-bit Windows 10 don't you think that's a bit premature?

There is no evidence of anyone phasing out 32bit application support, there's literally no reason to do so either.

Apple is the only company I know of doing such things.

The main issue for techs is that we shouldn't need a customer's internet account to set up their computer.

Well, to set up Windows 10, at least up through 1903, you don't if you are using the ISO on bootable media to do it. Any updates that have occurred since the ISO was built will be downloaded and applied if/when the user goes online.

Microsoft has been making it harder to create a local account at install, but not impossible. See this article at Winaero:
Install Windows 10 Version 1909 With Local Account

I put in a "bad email" and it failed and then gave me the option for a local account - Network plugged in the whole time. It is removed from the main user creation page though. ugh.

I just enter 555-555-5555 for a phone number and the next screen will let you create a local account.

In Win10 Home you can convert it to local acct after the fact.
Sure, but who wants to create a dummy Microsoft account for a client just to get the system booted up? Even Apple gives you a little "skip for now" about signing into an Apple ID when you first set up a Mac.
