The way current wireless in your house works is so far behind in terms of technology i was at my sisters place for xmas there were 10 cell phones connected to wireless browsing web on laptop was sooo slow wireless is fine with a few devices but add more and well speed drops.
Wireless 6 or AX should be out soon hopefully it will fix those issues and be more robust.

I'd say it works pretty well considering how cheap the wireless access point is. The cellular tower can support much more simultaneous connections and throughput, but you don't really want to pay for one of these per house/apartment.

This is why you configure for a guest network and assign up and download speeds accordingly. I have my guest SSID at 5 meg down, 2 meg up. If they want faster speed, then thats what the cellular data plan is for as its unlimited data.

Way too many variables to really speak to this:

Where in the house was the router?
Was is down low behind a cabinet or up high in the middle of the house with no walls to penetrate?
Was it a dual band router?
Was it an old cheap router or a newer and more powerful one?
Does she live in a crowded area with lots of other hotspots/interference?
Was it her internet that was too slow? How fast is her service?

There are probably a thousand other variables to consider as well.

Sometimes those routers just start biting the dust and everything slows down. A new top of the line, better quality router in an open floor plan house in an area with a non-congested frequency should be able to handle 10 clients.

So did you see the exact make/model of wireless router/switch/gateway/access points? And how they were configured? We can't even tell how well it was setup/tuned/optimized...to begin to place blame on such a blanket term as "wireless sucks!" And we don't even know the internet connection speed of that house. What if it was a lowely 6 meg DSL connection? 6x devices streaming may very well have taxed that copper DSL!

Now if you had a 100 meg internet pipe there..and let me go in with a good Ubiquiti system and set it all up proper, nobody would say "wireless sucks!"

Any half-decent AP should handle 10 users without even breaking a sweat. Even on 802.11n it shouldn't be an issue so I wouldn't hang your hopes on 802.11ax being the solution. It sounds like your issue is rooted elsewhere.

But on the subject here's a good video on some of the new features in 802.11ax -
