I see the results of technician mistakes every day. The number 1 reason for data loss is hardware failure. Number 2 is human error, most of which is caused or compounded by technicians.
Example 1
Client takes drive to box store. Tech throws drive in freezer for an hour. No luck. Puts in for a few hours. Still no luck. So, he puts it in over night. Still no dice. So, he tells the client that it needs to be put in the freezer for the weekend. The client realizes that the tech has no clue and brings the drive to us. We discover the drive has a firmware issue, quote the client while he was here, he gave us the go ahead. I had a file listing for him within 15 minutes, targeted the file that he wanted and he left with the targeted file within an hour. We had the whole drive mirrored and recovered before the end of the day.
Example 2
4 drive RAID 5 stops responding. Tech finds that multiple drives are reported bad and tries to swap out various drives and force the system to rebuild. The client says that they have a tape backup, so the tech simply replaces the bad drives, rebuilds a fresh RAID 5 and restores the backup. They discover the backup was too old and then come to us for a recovery.
As you would expect, data is not recoverable. If the tech would have simply remove and replaced all the drives for the backup restore, we would have recovered all their data. But now, the business was on the brink of going out of business.
Example 3
Tech has a drive that detects, but cannot load the file system because of CRC errors. So, he runs SpinRite (after I advised him not to over the phone). After a few hours, SpinRite stops responding and the drive starts thrashing. Now the drive no longer detects. He brings it to us and we open the drive to find several deep rings in the platter surface. So, because the cause of the problem was not properly diagnosed and the tech chose to ignore my advice, he destroyed a client's drive and rendered their data unrecoverable.
Example 4
Computer shop who promotes themselves as a data recovery lab gets a drive from a client. Drive does not spin, so the tech uses the freezer. But after a week of using the freezer, the client gets the drive to us. We remove the PCB, see the MCU chip with a very large hole burned into it, reprogram a replacement PCB, mirror the drive with a few bad sectors and return the data to the client the next day.
The most common theme that we see is that the technician is trying to do do things without understanding what he is doing. This is why we, at Recovery Force, encourage our service partners to give us a call when they encounter an issue with data loss and we can discuss the safest course of action.
