Why are some techs so bad?

As with most of your posts, I agree 100% with what you are saying, but that doesn't mean you couldn't benefit from a couple of weeks at finishing school.:D

LOL, yeah, I know . . . .

Believe it or not, while I am a very straight forward guy, I do not come off quite as much of a prick in person as much as I do on paper. I know how I sound on text and I am fine with that. I am a firm believer in not beating around the bush and giving it straight . . . your right though, it's not always well received . . . I will try and tone it down a bit. :)

On a side note, I tend to be harder on those who should know better (techs) and I tend to sympathize with those who don't (customers). I treat my customers well and I have had very few that were not happy with our customer service and support.

i didnt get around to reading all of this topic but all i have to say on this is

( i know you have taken it back now and got them onboard ) but

Never slag off other computer companies. I get to this all the time.companies or home users putting other shops or people down. i just say i have never used them or had a reason to but i will take your advise onboard.

I have heard so many techs slag other techs off and it doesnt look good to the customer trust me, thats all i need to say:)

Agree 100%!
I have never slagged off competitiors, in this instance I completed the work, and then gave them a very detailed invoice listing everything I had done.
I then went through the invoice with the client, explaining everything, why it was done, the result and when it should be done again. This alone gave the client trust in my charges and work, and hopefully if they compare it to the last invoice from the previous tech will feel they are getting much better value.
As a mobile tech I think that 50% of of selling my services is selling myself to the client. They won't hire me if they don't like me.

Is it just me or are there an abnormal amount of threads where someone is sh**ing on someone, or calling each other ignorant or what have you. I bet there are plenty of members who think twice about posting in fear of being bashed or told they don't belong in the computer business. This is a great place for info and knowledge, but I think some of us are a little to quick to judge others. My 2 cents..

Nope - Its happening, just ignore and plough through!;)

I don't think so, none of us are perfect. If someone replies to one of my posts in what I consider to be a negative or insulting manner I am old enough to ignore it. I often have trouble putting into words what I am thinking, and as a result have been slated on various different forums. It happens.

Different people have different ways of replying to posts, some come across as blunt and often harsh (PCX "Cough" "Cough") and some are very good at hand holding and writing long detailed replies to questions that, perhaps, should have been googled before posting.

Sometimes people (including myself) just don't like to hear the truth from someone more experienced.

Personally, I find "heated discussions" make quite good reads as long as they don't end up just being name calling threads. The mods here do a good job overall, much better than some other forums I frequent.

I wouldn't have thought many members hear would be afraid to post.

Yeah, putting other techs or shops down in front of customers is a very bad idea and really just makes you look bad and even desperate. I even defend Geek Sqaud. I explain to customers that though they should have better more qualified technicians for the rates they charge, they have to charge an outrageous price in order to weed out most of their customer base. If they did not, they would have way too much business and their wait time an quality control would be WAY out of control opposed to just out of control.

Yeah, I am most def not a hand holder, sorry. I am here to help (and yes, sometimes rant) but I try and be as clear and direct as possible. Also, I call things how I see it, if its wrong, then its wrong, if its unethical, then its unethical. I do not beat around the bush and hope not to hurt peoples feelings. Most of us here are men and should be able to take things like a man, especially if you own a business.

With that said, I probably could just leave things be when people say stupid stuff . . . and maybe I will for now on. Most people are not worth arguing with anyways. It just so happens that I was frustrated with a similar situation myself and let it out on the thread. Sorry.

(Stuff snipped) (bolding mine)

Just a slight aside. You are aware, I presume, that morals, ethics, and right and wrong are very flexible terms. For example, there are those here who would say that adding a markup to hardware purchases is unethical and wrong. There are those here who would say that using someone else's unsecured private wireless signal is perfectly moral, ethical, and correct. For a more extreme example, see suicide bombers. They are completely convinced that what they do is moral, ethical, and correct.

Yeah, no comment.

I think certain, relatively new, members cannot but help take this elitist, morally superior tone in most of his...errm I mean their...posts.

I see the results of technician mistakes every day. The number 1 reason for data loss is hardware failure. Number 2 is human error, most of which is caused or compounded by technicians.

Example 1
Client takes drive to box store. Tech throws drive in freezer for an hour. No luck. Puts in for a few hours. Still no luck. So, he puts it in over night. Still no dice. So, he tells the client that it needs to be put in the freezer for the weekend. The client realizes that the tech has no clue and brings the drive to us. We discover the drive has a firmware issue, quote the client while he was here, he gave us the go ahead. I had a file listing for him within 15 minutes, targeted the file that he wanted and he left with the targeted file within an hour. We had the whole drive mirrored and recovered before the end of the day.

Example 2
4 drive RAID 5 stops responding. Tech finds that multiple drives are reported bad and tries to swap out various drives and force the system to rebuild. The client says that they have a tape backup, so the tech simply replaces the bad drives, rebuilds a fresh RAID 5 and restores the backup. They discover the backup was too old and then come to us for a recovery.

As you would expect, data is not recoverable. If the tech would have simply remove and replaced all the drives for the backup restore, we would have recovered all their data. But now, the business was on the brink of going out of business.

Example 3
Tech has a drive that detects, but cannot load the file system because of CRC errors. So, he runs SpinRite (after I advised him not to over the phone). After a few hours, SpinRite stops responding and the drive starts thrashing. Now the drive no longer detects. He brings it to us and we open the drive to find several deep rings in the platter surface. So, because the cause of the problem was not properly diagnosed and the tech chose to ignore my advice, he destroyed a client's drive and rendered their data unrecoverable.

Example 4
Computer shop who promotes themselves as a data recovery lab gets a drive from a client. Drive does not spin, so the tech uses the freezer. But after a week of using the freezer, the client gets the drive to us. We remove the PCB, see the MCU chip with a very large hole burned into it, reprogram a replacement PCB, mirror the drive with a few bad sectors and return the data to the client the next day.

The most common theme that we see is that the technician is trying to do do things without understanding what he is doing. This is why we, at Recovery Force, encourage our service partners to give us a call when they encounter an issue with data loss and we can discuss the safest course of action.

I hope my blurb wasn't too much.

It used to be that men would take things like men. You could talk to them and tell them to buck up and take it or move on. You used to be able to correct a man and point out where they are wrong and expect a change or in the very least you would expect them to take it like a man and not cry about it.

Things sure have changed in the last generation or so. Men are way more sensitive and unable to process rejection and turn that rejection into progress. I know we live in a new day, but some of you guys need to learn how to stop crying, take things like a man and not expect everyone here to hold your hand. If you don't like it, then keep it to your self, if you think its wrong and can prove, step up like a man and do it, but stop whining. My sister whines less then some of you guys.

Aside from the occasional rant, I do what I can to give constructive criticism and instruction that will help you if you actually listen. Think what you want, think that I am a moral elitist on my high horse if it makes you feel better. If you don't like this horse, then you can walk.

I get it ... I get frustrated and say things to people from time to time that gets me an invitation to someone's office to "have the talk about people skills" and I learned not to paint people with a broad brush so to speak. I have seen over the years that the most common reason for Tech mistakes is either the tech gets in a hurry or they have poor attention to detail ... which doesnt mean they dont have the skills or are morons.

I have a friend who sounds much like you PCX and is very blunt to the point where he now prefaces replies to questions with "Ok... I can tell you the truth or what you want to hear.... which is it, but be warned if you pick the truth I will not sugar coat it"

I have seen people just say "Nevermind..." and walk away already knowing what he is going to say lol.
