Take a look at the new Dr Webb under "Tool of the week" guys. I just ran it last night on mine and my wife's personal machines; it found 26 pieces of malware on one machine and 17 on the other. These machines regularly get several other programs run on them. Furthermore Firefox has been running slow the last few days and I couldn't figure out why; this morning they're both back up to normal speed.
If a client is obviously a very basic user I used to recommend AVG, as it's a good basic install and forget AV. But now I recommend Avast 5 as they got rid of the crappy old music player like interface and I've heard clients say they like the fact it tells them in a voice that it has been updated, so they know it's working. I use Avast at home and never had an issue. So now I recommend Avast to clients and never heard a complaint. With that I also make sure they have malwarebytes on their system too.
at the shop we recommend AVG
we tell people to avoid Norton, McAfee.
Personally i like to use Avira, been using the free edition since 03 and have NEVER had a virus on my personal computer, it has great detection and removal rates.
I really like Avast...tried the rest, but I keep coming back to Avast. The new user interface totally blows away the old one, and the detection rates are just fantastic. It's light on resources, and even the registration process (for the free edition) is even easier now with the update to version 5. Fantastic.
I like MSE. I have been recommending it to people and thought I was sending them down the wrong paths? But it seems to work great for what it is... and its free!
I also like Avast 5. I used it before in 4 also. I have never had a virus hit me. I used to love avg, then for some reason they turned it into a resource hog. I know I converted a coworker to it from vipre. He bought it like 3 weeks ago and came home to an infected pc. He was really disappointed because he had read some great reviews on it. I told him about avast and he really likes it now. He was wary of it being free. I told them they had paid versions as well. Then I explained I had been running free anti-viruses for 5+ years and he went with the free. I'm actually somewhat shocked to see so many votes for avast as it doesn't seem to get much talk time on here. I thought for sure on here, comodo or kasperky would have got the most votes. I was even considering switching to comodo.
