What to do with 200 dead hard drives?

A general question.

We have 200 dead hard drives - mostly hardware failures - but some electronics as well.

They are a mixture of 2.5 and 3.5 - mostly sata but some pata too.

I have an idea that the circuit boards may be worth something to someone.

Any ideas of what to do with them?

Wow i thought i was the only one , we have many boxes too, maybe not 200 but well over 100. Im slowly destroying them. Most of them are faulty or really old, taken from dumped systems as i will not take any hdd's to our local garbage facility.

I take my dead drives to the shooting range and put bullets through them. Usually a high-powered rifle will shoot all the way through.

As for a pistol, it depends. Generally speaking the bullets go in but don't come out the other side. Regardless they do a LOT of damage!


Obviously, all of this is meaningless if you live in the "Socialist Republic of the Bitchy Queen" or certain parts of the "Down Under"... I don't really know about Ireland.

+1...When I was in high school I had an internship (computer networking) at a Naval base close to where I was living at the time. I got the pleasure of watching Navy Seals rig up C 4 to a bunch of HDDs with sensitive data on them. I was then allowed to watch them blow the HDDs to smitherines (from a bunker of course). One of the more memorable moments in my life.

You could do what this guy does, if you have the time or you're kid needs to earn some money.

Neat way to learn what's in a hard drive, although it doesn't seem very feasible time/money wise.

Seems like everbody has a way to make a buck from someones junk.

We have a recycler here that pays us about $1.20 a pound, if I remember correctly, and gives us a certificate of destruction.

Pull the magnets...

I'm starting to save the magnets from some of the hard drives.

You can try to sell them to motorcycle enthusiasts to attach to the under carriage of their motorcycle. Not much more aggravating to a motorcyclist then to have to sit at a left turn signal that won't turn because it won't recognize that you're there. Magnets will oftentimes make the difference between being ignored or being recognized and having the light turn green for your left turn.

You can also give them away to friends, the magnets that is, not the hard drives...

Luckily my state allows me to pull out even if the light is red...after a waiting period. Need a pretty potent magnet to trip the light sensor from what I've read...I have not tried the trick of attaching a magnet under my frame though. I'm imagine it needs to be pretty strong...to withstand vibrations/shock/wind sheer at speed, and to be able to have the magnetic field reach down about 10" to the road surface and then a few inches beneath the pavement to the coil under there.

Lol at this. Guilty as charged. Life's a bit different over here to where I used to live (St Lucia) where I used to go to the range every couple of weeks and had a license for concealed carry.

ill prolly take all the magnets of those hdds. i guess its a neodymium magnet they put. very strong magnets. can be used in many stuff.

Hard drive parts can be worth some good money.

I have a friend who has a data recovery business, and they often need specific parts, very specific.

You could liste them on ebay or something like that.
Alot of work but I've seen some boards go for 200$+++.

They use either complete parts of some chips from the boards, since some data recovery hobs can go up to a couple thousands, they are often willing to pay good money for parts they need.

I agree with jfm. I paid for a few drives for a data recovery job the other day. Even if you think it's bad, sometimes the parts can be used, like the boards as long as their are no burn marks.
