What Computer Repairs / IT Requests Do You Dislike Most?

F***ing old timers wanting to play farmville on their computer... their servers are a piece of crap and the game crashes multiple times, even with everything up to date...

lmao. Completely agree. I got out of break/fix and sustain years ago because of this and only consult on the side now. I work for a mssp though now, so I get a unhealthy dose of this daily still.

Internet issues or "it's just slow" pita!

This too.

Them: "It's slow!"

Me: "Okay. Is it the computer that's slow, or the internet that's slow?"

Them: "The whole thing. It's just slow!"

Me: "Okay let me rephrase, is it slow when you try to open a file or program or is it slow when you try to open an internet page?"

Them: "It's just slow. Like if I try to open Google it takes a long time."

Me: "Okay so Chrome is taking a long time to load?"

Them: "Yea, when I click the blue 'E' to go to Google it takes a long time to come up."

Me: "..."

This and the ones that come to you with a problem and when you give your opinion based on what their describing, just say "no, thats no the issue, my friend that as an engenniring in IT told me that its something else, but he can't fix it because he's to busy...." yeah right...

We had an old guy this week ask us to build him a gaming PC in a bright orange case. i7, 16Gb RAM, SSD & HDD, 4Gb Graphics Card. I asked him what games he plays - Farmville!

I hate doing DC jack repair. My policy is if its no longer economical to do additional repair after the DC jack is fixed, I simply undo the repair and eat the cost (labor). I have several laptop battery on stock for testing but unfortunately to many types.

Trying to get them to understand their computer is not slow. It's the freaking connection!
Some people don't know their computer does more than act as an internet connection.
Computer:
i7
8gb ram
SSD drive
etc., etc.

Connection:
3 Mb service for a desktop, laptop, tablet, phones, etc.

Maybe I need a faster computer...............bang my head against the wall.

I've moved away from DC jack repairs because of this. Now if the jack is broken (and it's not the newer plug-in variety) it's motherboard swap time. I've yet to run into a system that I've not been able to fix that way yet.

Heh, I had a couple come in a few months back and buy a new system from me. i5/8gb/256gb ssd/etc, nice system. When they arrived to pick it up I demo'd it for them to show them how fast it was and they left ecstatic. I get a call less than a week later from them complaining that the computer I sold them was junk and it was just as slow as their old one (an old C2D/2gb/250gb hdd). Finding this hard to believe I told them I'd gladly take a look at it and asked if I could remote in. When it got into their system it was acting very slow but it wasn't the computer's fault. I checked fast.com and they were getting less than 1.5mbps down (which was the lowest, entry-level package you could get in this area... 10 years ago).

Back in 2014 we built a guy this pc for him to use in his hotel room. He was working in the oil industry and he was from out of state. Was tired of using his laptop. This was less than a month after the GTX 980 came out.

Corsair Carbine 400R
Intel Core i7-4790k
Noctua air cooler
16gb ram
GTX 980 4gb (cost was $729)
250GB SSD
750W PSU
Windows 8.1

Total cost was about $1,900. It was just about as good as the one he had at home.

What game does he play? Some browser based game.....

Just had a "DC Jack Repair" job come in. I started disassembly by taking the hdd cover off the bottom and saw what I thought was mud all over it and filling up pretty much every crevasse.

"Well, this turned into a data recovery job" I thought.

Then I took a closer look at all the little "twigs" and wave of horror washed over me. They were legs. Roach legs everywhere. ROACHES EVERYWHERE. Every bit of that "mud" was just dead roaches piled up on dead roaches, so thick that I thought it was dried mud. A literal breeding nest inside this tiny netbook.

And I'm supposed to see Alien Covenant tonight? It was like a scene straight from the bowels of Hadley's Hope where the Aliens covered the walls in their bile and secretions and were climbing all over the walls, only with roaches, and thankfully dead (as far as I know).

I'd have posted pics but I bagged it and double bagged it quicker than I could say "oh hell no".

So yeah, I hate DC Jack repairs that turn out to be roach nests.

I've got one of those systems in the shop right now. Sucks when you have to tell them that the software that they purchased from the phone guy is junk and they just gave away their CC info.
Telling them the money they spent is worthless, and it actually is going to give them problems is the worst. Then cleaning it after can be a head ache sometimes as well.

Anything involving laptops or all in ones. Especially ones that need part replacements and are hard to strip down.

Onsite work that could be better done in my workshop. It's annoying when a client is breathing down my neck because I am sitting around doing nothing while waiting for an automated task to complete before I can do the next task.

Clients who specify something quite exact but actually want something totally different. This one is quite annoying when you have spent a lot of work on the specification but then realize that they are actually wanting something a lot different to what they specified and are resistant to advice that will better fit their needs.
