what antivirus

+1 for Eset just started using it, with interesting results, every machine scanned has had infection, they were running avg, avast, kaspersky and mse.

The kaspersky one shocked me, the others not so much.

-For AVG, avast!, and MSE, I am not surprised at all...
-For Kaspersky, it is rare, but it happens...

To be honest....I see that very often simply when changing one AV brand to another on computers...regardless of the brand. All AV brands will miss stuff, that others pick up. I've seen MSE pickup and clean things that Eset, Kaspersky, MalwareBytes, and HitManPro missed. And we all know MSE is far from a 99% product.

The best virus protection is some version of Linux or OS X. If pressed to install some third party AV on a customers Windows box I guess I'd use Avast. I personally would never install an AV on my machines.

I realize it's trollbait, but I'm so tired of the *nix or OSX as a secure option trope.

First, let me say that I run a web-facing Manjaro box and I love it.

Linux is super secure as long as you never run any web-facing services with it. If you do, you need to know your shnizz. How secure is your apache? Your samba? SSH still enabled by default? Reconnect limit? Hammer prevention? Permissions on your .htaccess? Python have it's own user in the machine group? Autologin turned on? Dropbox enabled? Just for fun look at your logs, I guarantee you that you've got login attempts from Pakistan, India, China, and probably Iran. Portscans to be sure.

OSX? As a secure platform? Every year at Pwn2Own, a perfectly up-to-date Apple product is the first machine owned. A couple years ago it took something like 11 minutes. Most small iOS updates are exploit patches.

That's not to say that these things don't exist in the PC world, it's to say that the illusion of security is NOT security. As macs have increased in market size, so have the attacks. Just the other day we became aware of a massive, OSX-only botnet that's apparently existed for quite some time.

Whatever, I know, shaddup. I'm just cranky. :)

Well it's true though, years ago the birkenstock and patchuli oil wearing folks that drink the Apple cool aid would brag about being virus free, but it's no longer true. The reason malware writers turned to the "web players" to infect computers, was because Windows was tightened up a bit, but also because the rise in popularity of CrApples again. The "java exploits" are getting rampant out there.

How many times are we going to hear this ?

Linux is not a replacement for windows and never will be, NEVER EVER. It is also not "virus protection" to replace your entire O/S and all its apps with something else that for most people is not now nor will ever be a choice due to lack of compatibility and the requirement to learn a completely new environment.

Say what you will, but linux Mint has come a long way and I have never in 11 years seen an infected Mac. ;)

As many times as it takes to get the stupid to wear off?

Someone said something about having to learn a whole new interface. Yea, no one has done that with Win8. At the end of the day you can install Malwarebytes, an AV and lock the system down to the point of almost not being usable and you are still gonna be 100 times more likely to be infected than on a Linux box or a Mac. end of story. Get over it.

Anti-virus is a software program or set of programs that are designed to prevent, search for, detect, and remove software viruses, and other malicious software like worms, trojans, adware, and more.

These tools are critical for users to have installed and up-to-date because a computer without anti-virus software installed will be infected within minutes of connecting to the internet. The bombardment is constant, with anti-virus companies update their detection tools constantly to deal with the more than 60,000 new pieces of malware created daily.

Pc patches, as per my original posting to you back in August 2013, please start your OWN introduction thread, answering the required questions in full, before you start copy and pasting verbatim terms and things a qualified it professions is aware of.

I'm going to have to report you to the moderation team, for their perusal, as it appears that you are not a technician. Possible spammer in the making.
