I bought one of these hard drives from Amazon and it arrived yesterday. The date stamp on the drive indicated 11/2010 and said it had a 3 year warranty on the Amazon advert. I checked the serial number in the WD site and it said there was no warranty so I rang Amazon. They confirmed on the phone and in writing that indeed it had a three year warranty  am I missing something?

can you use crystaldiskinfo to see how many hours are on it? and startup times, if its very low < 2 hours then its a new drive and western digital would warranty it based it the date of purchase, you would just have to send WD your receipt from amazon if something did happen to it.

Test it first, if it is healthy, it is ok to use even if it was made in 2010. As for one year or 3 years, postage then might be close to the value of this disk years later.

Not clear as to the Dell reference - if it has a Dell part no. any warranty is with Dell and it probably isn't going to be 3 yrs. The reason the serial number doesn't show up on the WD site is OEM manufacturer drive warranties only apply to the OEM and not anyone downstream.
