Want to access Verizon email (now AOL) through Gmail

I have an elderly client that uses a Verizon email account that she accesses through AOL. She wants to access it through Gmail. However when I go to add it to her Gmail and I give it the @verizon.net email and password it gives an error indicating the server doesn't exist. I assume this is because it's actually hosted at AOL. But there is no way to change the server settings as it just asks for the login and password and then says the server doesn't exist.

Is there a way to do this?

I assumed that wasn't even an option since Verizon long ago migrated it all to AOL.

Testing this, when I go to verizon.net it jumps to verizon.com for their regular FiOS and cell phone service pages.

The email account works fine, she's just looking to move away from the AOL interface.

I can relate to that. I hate the interface.
Use an email client like eMclient. It allows 2 personal addresses for free.

Or Thunderbird, or even (New) Outlook. There are lots of free email clients out there, and I do believe that the latest iteration of Outlook is very "non-tech savvy" user friendly.

If someone has multiple email accounts across different providers, an email client really makes sense. I love eM Client, too, if all you need is one or two addresses without having to go to the paid version. Vivaldi has a nice email client even if you don't touch the web browser, though they're part of a single application. The email client is dedicated, not webmail.
