Hi! Just thought I'd see if anybody had a opinion on this one. I have a dell inspiron 1501 with 2 gb and a AMD Turion 64 XS dual-core Vista 32bit. This thing shuts down playing online type sims game and at a couple other sites. I have done extensive memory tests, virus scans, tweaked the system to best performance, disabled startups to around 40 processes. Nothing in the logs. From the desktop task manager shows 2-4% CPU, memory use 40%. I also checked the drivers for updates. Anybody any ideas? I can't add more ram either, its maxed.

Heat maybe? The extra horsepower 3D gaming needs could be enough to put it into thermal shutdown if it's not getting adequate airflow. See if cleaning the dust out helps any - I've seen some laptop heat sinks with enough dust, hair and lint covering them you'd swear you could make a winter coat out of the stuff. You may need to re-seat the heat sink with a good thermal compound like Arctic Silver 5.

yes, maybe, I did blow out the vents a little the last time, she said it was running fine til recently it started shutting down again.

Ya think maybe that is a clue? Blowing out the vents alone isn't enough because if you are just forcing air in through the vents, then where does the dust go? Nowhere, except just sits inside the machine because theres no way out and continues to suck in more dust. Laptops just like desktops are vacuum cleaners trapping dirt and just like a vacuum sometimes they get full of dirt then they have to be disassembled and thoroughly cleaned. Also just like Skyhooker said, since it will be disassembled you might as well clean off the old used paste and apply some fresh stuff.

I installed speedfan and started 2 ie windows, outlook, photoshop, core temp peaked at 74C. Seems to run between 50-65C with just ie running. Still think I need to clean it? After looking over the service manual looks like the whole thing has to be stripped to get to the fan, yuck

Oh, come on, you have been here for a long time. Everything seems to point to heat. You just dont wanna do the tear down. :p

From the numbers I remember, that's definitely in the thermal shutdown range - happy dissasembly!

rats! guess I'd better make a call, just curious, what would you charge to clean it out? This one involves removing the display, keyboard, touchpad, etc. to get down to the fan.

Sounds like a good 1.5 hr. job, and my shop rate is $50/hr, so $75 at least.

I emailed him $80 cuz I may need extra time to find all the frickin screws I'll remove (whine) but I told him no guarantees, this one doesn't really look like it would be really clogged inside, but if he does want me to go for it I hope thats it, they've already paid me alot for malware removal and system tweaking, which it really needed too and did help.
