im currently working on a vista machine and i am unable to open any exe files and i have not been able to open the registry at this point. i've been searching all day with no success as all the fixes that i have found require use of the registry. im hoping somebody can point me in the right direction.

vdub, im currently trying to fix it remotely but any attempt to use a run a fix file has not worked. all that happens is the system just seems to hang and i have to go to the task manager and end the task.

elemdee, i've tried using the run box, the cmd prompt and navigating to the folder and clicking the application.

another thing is im not sure if this is just a broken association. i was able to run some apps but the freeze up right away and most do not even load up. i am not getting the "open with" dialog box, it seems to know how to open it, it just stops responding when it tries.

Have you removed the malware that caused the problem?
Look at this.

If your EXE file associations are corrupted, it can be difficult to open REGEDIT, or to even import REG files. To work around this, press CTRL-ALT-DEL and open Task Manager. Once there, click File, then hold down the CTRL key and click New Task (Run). This will open a Command Prompt window. Enter REGEDIT.EXE and press Enter.

lonestar, i do believe whatever cause this is no longer on the system as i have run countless antivirus/malware apps, both in windows and through rescue disks. also i did already try this method to open regedit but again the system just hangs and doesnt open anything. does the same when i try and use a reg file

elemdee, i tried safe mode again just now and was able to use regedit(wasnt able to yesterday), i ran 2 different reg fixes and neither one worked.

another thing driving me crazy is that i have no network connection when im in safe mode(with networking), ipconfig shows 169.x.x.x and ping does not work but regular mode will show 192.x.x.x and i can ping but i am unable to use any apps to browse. im really trying to avoid wiping this system but i cant seem to find a solution. the customer also decided yesterday that he wanted me to upgrade to windows 7 but i am unable to run the app off the cd to start the upgrade

What did these reg fixes that you found online say that they were supposed to fix exactly? And did you run all those scans offline? Somewhere in there did you use Ccleaner? Are you familiar with or have you used Process Explorer? http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx
Were any scans' .exe's blocked from being able to run?

okay, i am confused. Are you remotely accessing this computer, or do you have it on your bench now?

Not trying to be smart ***, but I read you were working on this remotely, and then when in safe mode you have no network connection?

Just trying to understand.

reg fixes were supposed to handle broken exe association. most of my scans were done with bootable virus scans: avira antivir rescue disk, kaspersky rescue disk, bit defender rescue disk. and i ran spybot s&d while booted in UBCD4win. also i did run ccleaner while in SafeMode, i cleaned everything i could and fixed all registry errors detected. i am not familiar with process explorer.

datadata, didnt mean remotely like that. i have the computer on my bench but i had the registry loaded through UBCD4Win

Is this a desktop or a laptop, and what type of network adapter (internal, card, wired / wireless) are you trying to use? I have run into this before with aftermarket cards in older laptops that require drivers to load, since they will not load in safe mode.

its a desktop. ive tried it using the onboard NIC and a PCI NIC that i added in. both work in normal mode, neither in SafeMode

You haven't used process explorer?

You are relying on scans when your fix could have taken 10 minutes if you just look at the processes and manually remove the infection. It sounds to me like your still infected. The infection is messing with the exe association as well as the proxy settings. Changing them back will do you no good if you are still infected.

In regards to upgrading. Why would upgrade any system let alone an infected one. Also I don't think Windows 7 will even upgrade XP.

Edit: Sorry I see your running Vista, In my opinion don't n&p that system. I would use this as a learning experience. Scanners are a waste of time just find the infection and remove it don't rely on a scanner that may or may not have the definition of your infection.
