vista error message

got a toshiba laptop in today, did all the usual troubleshooting like tested memory, hard drive etc, customer said he opened up a spam email and switched it off as usual and it now comes up with this error The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected Error. Windows Installation cannot proceed,. To install Window, click “OK” to restart the computer, and then restart the installation..
did a search on google and one soloution was to change the memory in the bios from auto to 2.0v anybody seen this error and possible fix, i was thinking the files are corrupted and should reload windows.

My first step would be to boot from a vista disk and try repair boot option or something like that, maybe repair startup. Can't remember what it's called.

Changing the voltage on a laptop? I always figured they come pre-configured where you wouldn't need to up voltages or play with latencys.

First off, if it's possible, backup this machines hard drive. Everything you do from this point is very risky and might only make things worse.

This really sounds like a corrupted file structure that found something missing or now has something that left it thinking the system was midway through a install.

Microsoft loves to give us generic "fall through" errors which often do not relate to what's really wrong with the installation.

Before you play with it, back it up then go to town on the machine.

I may be shooting in the dark but I have a feeling the customer tried reinstalling windows himself, or tried a virus cleaning himself, ask him for a little more info on what happened.

When you say "it now comes up with this error", do you mean it didn't say that before your tests? If not, I agree with abe and ACG. A fairly likely scenario is that they started to do a reinstall (perhaps because of something they got in an email, or maybe the email bit was a cover up for porn), then realized that they were wading too deep, and cut the power.

Thanks for the advice, the message was there before i did the tests and is still there. It does seem that they tried to reload windows, i am going to phone the customer and ask a few questions. aslo could a virus do that to the system. if the customer did not try and reinstall windows.

What he said. I'm assuming you found a forum post with this solution. Most likely, the person that posted the solution was trying to overclock and ran into this issue.

spoke to customer, said he never tried to reload windows, said the message started to come up after he opened the email. anyway wants XP putting on, does not like vista, so off to buy a new copy of XP.

make sure you can get all the drivers before you put xp on the machine.
