If you can boot to a PE, then start the manual removal process until you get it to start in safe and take over from there.

uhh.... you didn't mention if the keyboard worked....
Like the mouse, lights on but I cant say if it works after windows boots up.
KB does work with LiveCDs, and when making changing boot sequence, etc.
By the way, changing ouse and/or KB to different USB ports doesn't work either.

How can you not know if the keyboard works??? Can't you use it to login and do your business???

Either way I guess you're probably better off with one of the other suggestions, WinPE/Linux 'Live' CD/Slave to another machine.

I'm confused too though ...

You don't NEED a mouse to preform most, if not all, tasks. I'm confused as to why you aren't sure if the keyboard works.

Try a usb to ps/2 adapter or reverse it and see if that works.

+1 on not having to use a mouse. Legacy keyboard commands have always worked. Hopefully they don't screw that one up in Win 8, too.

probably one of those upperfilter/lowerfilter registry entry deals.

Edit: Sorry I don't have the specific entries my notes are inaccessible to me at this time. I am sure someone else is familiar with the upperfilter registry entries for the keyboard to at least get that working.

OK guys.

To clear up the confusion, usb keyboard does not work either.
Both mouse and keyboard work with Live CDs but not with XP installation on the pc.

I have removed the Winwebsec virus from the hardrive using an external usb-to-sata dock and another pc.

But I still can't login into pc as neither the usb mouse or usb keyboard work, and there are no ps2 ports.

Ideas?

Check USB settings in BIOS to ensure USB keyboard is supported.

Time to get a PCI to PS/2 Card for the mouse and keyboard. You can never have too many tools. :p

This probably won't work either.

I have seen this before a few times - only ever with 5150s. If you can get the owners OWN kb&m the you're sorted.

Failing that use UBCD to edit the registry to allow auto-logon at which point the new hardware will install and then you're OK.

Yup. I have seen these before too with the 5150s. Shortest way might eb to have the user bring in their keyboard. Or just nuke and pave the thing.

I've encountered this several times, I keep a Dell branded mouse & Kb on hand just for this line of Dells. They also need to be in the right USB port to work. However, I had one come in this last week where the Dell Kb/Ms didn't work either. It had been reloaded so it never have a Dell Kb or Ms attached.

I had the customer bring in their Kb & Ms, then I could get into it. But, then combfix kept hanging and nothing else was working either so I ended up reloading, anyway.

One other thing to try is to set the 'autoadminlogon' in the registry from UBCD, then it might load into normal windows just long enough to register your Kb or ms driver. This doesn't work in safe mode, since you have that annoying 'safe mode, yes / no' dialog box.
