Graphics: EVGA 9800 GTX
MB: Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L REV 2.0
Hello everyone. I got a call that this guys system was locking up on him when he was playing games. I went on site to check it out and sure enough while playing games (and pretty randomly too, at no certain point did the system lock up just random, could in 1 minute or 10) the system would video would freeze and speakers would buzz. He said it's been happening randomly for a couple of months.
First thing I did was re-install drivers. Didn't work. Next I ran a stress test on video and to my amaze it never locked up. So I went ahead and stress tested the memory and CPU and everything was fine. By the way the GPU and CPU all had good temps. Nothing was overheating. I told him I had a 9800 GT in the shop. He was ok with that model so I took the system back to the shop and swapped the card. I wanted to boot it up obviously and make sure everything was good. I hit power and everything lights up good but black monitors. Doesn't even try to display.
This kind of got me so I put the other card back in and the same thing happened. No video. I waited to see if I could hear windows booting in the speakers but never heard anything. So next I cleared CMOS double checked all connections and still the same thing. I put both cards in one of the lab computers and they are both working fine. Is this a bad PCI-E on the motherboard? Did I finish the issue off when I took his card out or what? I was wearing a static band the entire time and never touched the board. I've never had this happen before so It's kind of throwing me for a loop. There is no on board video on the MB. Suggestions? Thanks in advance and sorry for the long story. Just want you to get all details.
