Hello everyone. I got a call that this guys system was locking up on him when he was playing games. I went on site to check it out and sure enough while playing games (and pretty randomly too, at no certain point did the system lock up just random, could in 1 minute or 10) the system would video would freeze and speakers would buzz. He said it's been happening randomly for a couple of months.

First thing I did was re-install drivers. Didn't work. Next I ran a stress test on video and to my amaze it never locked up. So I went ahead and stress tested the memory and CPU and everything was fine. By the way the GPU and CPU all had good temps. Nothing was overheating. I told him I had a 9800 GT in the shop. He was ok with that model so I took the system back to the shop and swapped the card. I wanted to boot it up obviously and make sure everything was good. I hit power and everything lights up good but black monitors. Doesn't even try to display.

This kind of got me so I put the other card back in and the same thing happened. No video. I waited to see if I could hear windows booting in the speakers but never heard anything. So next I cleared CMOS double checked all connections and still the same thing. I put both cards in one of the lab computers and they are both working fine. Is this a bad PCI-E on the motherboard? Did I finish the issue off when I took his card out or what? I was wearing a static band the entire time and never touched the board. I've never had this happen before so It's kind of throwing me for a loop. There is no on board video on the MB. Suggestions? Thanks in advance and sorry for the long story. Just want you to get all details.

Hi and welcome to the forums. This does seem like an odd issue. Have you tried putting the card into another pci-e slot on the motherboard, assuming there is more than 1 on there.
Sounds like if the other card is a known working card that either the slot or the mobo may have an issue..any busted caps?

Have you checked the hard drive for any malware running? Also when you had it working did you notice if the ram was being fully used or the cpu was at max load?

just some thoughts.

Have you checked the temps? GPU-Z is a great tool

What operating System is in use?
I think he's more concerned about the non-posting issue.

If you don't have a POST card to see where it's hanging in the POST process, try pulling the memory from the system and powering it on. If you get a beep code, that probably means that the system is POSTing but is not producing video output. I would then try a video card in a different port (perhaps a PCI port or onboard if the motherboard has it). If you don't get a beep code with no memory in the system then you have a bigger problem.

Make sure to test the power supply to. Many of those video cards need extra power to run. Also verify that you plugged the extra power in to the card to.

I have accidentally done that before, installed a new video card but forgot the external power source and it will not post.

Thanks for the help everyone! And sorry for the delayed response I had to take care of some other high priority things. I did pull the memory yesterday after I posted here and got beep codes. At that point I had to take a break from it.

Tried a PCI card and got video. It looks like it's the PCI-E slot. I even got the original card to work in it again for a bit but than after a while the same thing started happening. Still can't see any visual problems with the slot. Board is under warranty so I'm just going to swap it out for him.

That was something else I did. PSU was fine on voltages.

how did you determine it was the slot, and not the actual video card? did you test that card in another machine?

Yes, one of the first things I did when I got it to the lab.
