Grrr, its always something! I have a dell demension 5100 with NO ps2 ports, so I used a ps2>usb adapter with my ps2 keyboard and a usb mouse to do a clean install of xp. Both are fully functional before setup, then 1/2 way through when I have to put in a name- nothing, no go. I read where somebody said change the legacy usb support in the bios, but I have support prior to setup, so I don't see how that would help. ideas????

Solved!!!

Figured it out! Start the PC with the keyboard and mouse connected. insert the xp setup cd. if the first setup does not cause the mouse or keyboard to function at final stages, push the power button at that point to shut it down. Turn the PC back on. Another installation should popup. Leave the cd in. It should continue auto installation. Continue this method until all the drivers are installed. worked!!

Trust me, it does work. I had the same issue with a Dell that had no PS2's and the legacy usb support absolutely did the trick.

And I'm certain that it would have been a lot easier.

This is sort of unrelated, but those cheap Dell keyboards seem to have a problem with a windows update from sometime last year. The only way to use the keyboard was to uninstall and reinstall it every time you started windows. Another windows update fixed it a few months later, but not before I snapped one in half with my hands.

FYI don't snap a keyboard in half or keys will go flying everywhere. To this day I'm still finding random keys in my office.
