Unable to Connect to the intenet

I can see that your default gateway is a class A network (10.x.x.x) which means the subnet mask should be 255.0.0.0,

Do you have subnetting on your network (i.e you have logicaly divided you network into two or more networks)

If not then that could be the reason why, you need to change the subnet mask from 255.255.255.0 to 255.0.0.0

It could just be a router, such as NETGEAR, whose WAN port is connected to a modem, such as AT&T DSL, with an IP of 192.168.1.x. I've seen NETGEAR routers automatically change it's IP and subnet to 10.0.0.1/24 many times. They do this to avoid conflicts and routing issues.

Also, Apple AirPort Extremes by default use a subnet of 10.0.1.x/24.

It's not uncommon at all to see 10.x.x.x addresses used with a 255.255.255.0 subnet mask, and it works just fine as long as all other devices are on the same subnet (which would be the case if the DHCP server is assigning addresses correctly).

I doubt that would be the problem here.

Ok I see what you, I have never come across that tbh, better jot that down

I admit that network configs sometimes stump me but it looks from the config output that this computer was being used in a business network configuration with a commercial router (therefore the Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 10.0.0.1 setting typical of Cisco routers).
CMIIW but the DNS server also points to an internal server (private) rather than a public DNS server. That would be a good reason for no internet address resolution.
Change the DNS server to 8.8.8.8 (Google's DNS server) and see how that works.

One tool I use for optimizing my clients online experience is using DNS Benchmark to find the fastest DNS server for their location.

Thanks TN family for all of your great suggestions and help, I have tried them all. I think that it's virus related so I'm going to consult the client and take an image of the harddrive and reinstall an original windows OS.

The least you can do if you tried 'them all' is post the results. You posted that you pinged an address but couldn't get out?

Yes i have tried to pingout and could not get out.

If you ping a destination it just tells you that the destination(if it gets that far) doesn't answer icmp. You need to use tracert and see how far you go if indeed you get onto the internet.
You get an ip address from dhcp along with the router configured dns did you try to ping a web address? did it resolve to an ip address? These are standard network problem tests.

Someone suggested another dns server, did you try that?
I suggested checking the hosts file, did you check that?

I'm sorry but I get a bit frustrated when someone posts about this sort of thing and everyone gives ideas and a reload is the answer. If you know your networking stuff then 30 minutes(max) of testing will get you in a ball park area.:(

+1 for Martyn

I found it incredibly frustrating reading this thread. Other than posting the results of the ipconfig, you have offered up very little in the way of results.

I suspect you are running out of time and your client is wanting there PC back, hence why you now going to Nuke n Pave in the hope that it solves your issue. I am not having a go, but like Martyn, trying to offer some advice which will help you in future when trying to resolve an isssue which you are posting about here on TN.

What AntiVirus software is the PC running?
What firewall is running?
What was in the HOSTS file? "C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\"
TCP\IP properties?
IE options - Connections - Lan Settings?
Can you ping the loopback address Succesfully? 127.0.0.1
Can you ping the default gateway address Succesfully?
Try tracert as Martyn has suggested and post the results.

I had a computer come in with a similar problem yesterday. The computer could connect to the wireless but couldn't surf or anything, wasn't getting an ip aswell. Reset everything and disabled everything to c if anything was stopping it. Turns out uninstalled norton fixed it. It completely crashed the firewall!

Hi MortalTech,

I did see another user ask if you could ping the default gateway, how did this go? If it worked, can you do an nslookup against a website? so we can make sure dns is all ok.

Also I don't mean to be rude but have you checked that "Work Offline" isn't selected in IE as I believe this has probably caught us all out at some point?

Just wanted to say thanks for posting this. I've been working on this PC with the same issue for a couple of days, and it was driving me crazy. I had reset all the internet settings I could find, tried different browsers etc. Then I saw your post, uninstalled Norton, and everything started working again.

Running the complete uninstaller from Norton's website has worked for me on several occasions as well. I have seen the exact symptoms as the OP gave. Everything looks good when going through the settings. Pings to websites, pings router, etc. Everything is rosy. You just can't use those pesky things called browsers to surf the Internet.

Hey guys sorry it took so long to reply. I have been really busy as I am the only one at my store. I did nit give up on this problem I just ran out of time and had to get the laptop back to the customer. Although I did take an image of the HDD and have a similar machine that I will use later to test out on. I hate being stomp on something that I know is so simple. And I hate doing a N&P. I'm going to take time this weekend and figure it out and will post complete results asap. Btw MSE is the AV used and I also ran the complete Norton uninstaller.

That's understandable. Next time, we could much better assist you if you give us as much info as possible right off the bat. That way, we can rule out possible causes and focus on the most likely solution.
