Ok, I have a client who has a older machine, HP Pavilion 510n Desktop Intel (R) Celeron (TM) 1.2 GHz, 40g hd and 256mb memory...yeah, told u it was older...anyway, she had some boot issues, was able to boot into windows via recovery cd, ran chk dsk, installed all windows updates sp 2 and 3 and critical updates, ran hd diagnostics with hd tune...everything good......turned machine off.....went to power it back on 6 hours later.....will not post.....continuous beep code (about 1 sec each).....removed ram, tested power supply, on board video card, removed/inserted all cables inside the pc........I am stuck......

Hi RicoS

Check out the BIOS beep codes over at the HP site, unfortunately unable to post the direct URL as I'm still quite new to the forums.

Would certainly substitue the RAM if possible and double check the motherboard carefully for damage and bulging capacitors etc.

Let us know how you get on.

I would replace the power supply (regardless of how it tested) and see what I get. But, before that I would take a close look at every capacitor on the motherboard to make sure I don't have any leaking or puffed ones. Blown capacitors will give you this kind of weird response.

Did I miss something here. RicoS said PC wouldn't boot or had boot issues. Either he or the user put in the Windows Recovery CD and booted into windows, installed updates, and ran diagnostics.

If he was able to do all that booting from CD (used memory, used power supply, used motherboard, used harddrive, used ram) why would replacing any of these be an option?

Are there any add in cards or devices in the machine?

Can you boot the Windows Recovery CD again?

Did you find the meaning of the POST error tones?
