Ubuntu

It's 8.10, but not a big issue. I have noticed that each 6 month release fixes a lot of hardware issues. Also I love the open source idea as well.
I was surprised at how well Ubuntu worked with my 1 year old dual core laptop. The shortcut buttons, volume control on the front and memory card reader all work.

Yup, it's amazing how far I've seen linux come in a few years. I first tried to install debian with a net install several years ago when I had an unfriendly roommate so I lived in my bedroom. If you want hell give it a try (at least for a linux virgin). I gave up for a while, but came back a bit later. I had linux having issues with my newer rig and ubuntu just would not shut down correctly, something with my graphics card, and a long work around. Also Suse, and Fedora had issues as well. Only Mandriva worked, however the next release cycle all the other ones fixed their bugs, which really was only a few months. Still amazing to me.

I have been running Ubuntu for the last few years now. I'm running 8.10 currently. I have found it to be a great alternative to windows for a general family or personal computer. Good for surfing, homework, a/v, word processing, email... basically most of the same things people use windows for.

I also used it as a boot disc on failed systems along with UBCD4Win.

With the exception of some of the most popular specialty programs in imaging, gaming, audio processing, video editing and accounting not being able to run on Ubuntu - yet, i think Ubuntu is about a good 95% alternative to windows.

As an alternative, I will install Ubuntu on systems where the owner does not have a MS product key.

Although i firmly believe that most people would not even notice or care if they where using Ubuntu over windows as long as it does what they need it to do, windows inertia is a hard nut to crack.

Dell has taken Ubuntu mainstream.

I was putting together a "netbook" the other day on Dell, and noticed they are offering them with Ubuntu instead of Windows. The price difference was minor, with linux being $444, and Vista being $479. Seems that they are charging for installing it.

Hmmm, only $35 for XP? Makes one wonder.

I just want to say that for HTPC builds, Linux is the ONLY way to go (given that all your hardware supports Linux, that will be an issue more often than not). Once you see the clarity, hear the unabated sound, and notice the lack of lag, you will only watch movies that way. Sure, its a bitch to get it running perfect and everything working (especially if you descend into the deadly pit of MythTV) but once its there, you will love it. Edit: the above post is dead on; my first TEN attempts at install failed because I was getting erroneous downloads of the ISO but this can probably be avoided by checking the hashfiles.

Thank you!!

Hi Ron:

I wanted to thank you for the link to that site. It is just what I needed. I'm building a new Dell PowerEdge server and want to put Ubuntu on it.

:D:D:D:D:D

I've had Ubuntu running on 2 personal machines, FOR OVER TWO YEARS (nothing recent) I love it. For my needs though I find Windows is more practical. I love the compizfusion eye candy. I've turned on several customers to it and they are happy. Of course I do get
some calls when they come across something new and scary (haha). The customers who opted for Ubuntu were more advanced users than normal.

O !!! so now you guys are on the bandwagon...

LOL....

*** I used ubuntu but tried Linux Mint (based on ubuntu). It's been me & mint since then... A group of linux guru's said "let's take ubuntu, speed everything on it up so fast that it runs like a scalded dog, make EVERYTHING work even better than ubuntu, still maintain ubuntu compatability, tweak it till it screams speed, and call it mint."

Actually not jumping on any bandwagon. Ubuntu is nothing new and let's face it, they tried but it will never make it as a real option on new machines, no matter how cool the eye candy is and how ever stable it may be.

Sounds similar BestBuy / GeekSquad stuff that I always hear about on the forums ..

They may not be the best; but its very well marketed, and everyone knows about it. (And more than likely go here before they go to a local tech).

Same as Microsoft Windows. It may not be the best operating system out there, but everyone knows about it and uses it.

When I was playing with Ubuntu (still as a livecd at this stage) I was pressing buttons and trying to find out what everthing did and I saw these green bars up the top which I suspected was my battery level. I clicked it and it brought up my wireless interface which was running fine and showing me a list of the available AP's in my area. I was pleased

I'm pretty surprised the wifi worked from the live cd - you must have a popular chipset or something. Mine didn't work until I installed Ubuntu, then on first boot it said that there were 'restricted hardware drivers' available, like here. After I clicked yes, and rebooted it worked instantly... The previous year when I tried linux (I have a cycle where I try it every year to see if it has improved) my wifi wouldn't work at all, but I was incredibly happy to see that little wifi light turn from red to blue on the more recent version!

If unbuntu comes with your drivers it is a breeze to install but if you run into problems things can get quite tricky quite fast. if you browse the linux forums there are tons of posts of people who cannot get various bits of their laptop hardware working out of the box and plenty of the fixes are not the relatively easy Windows style - click this to reinstall your drivers stuff.

Ubuntu Ultimate Edition 2.3

If you like Ubuntu you will love the Ultimate Edition. I made the permanent switch back to linux not to long ago after having my PC infected for the first time in years. My data is critical, so I won't take chances with Windows again.

Check it out

lol.. I'm under 15 post, so no URL for me. Just google "Ubuntu Ultimate" Can't miss it.

Your AV probably wasn't up to date ;)

And since your data is critical, I'm assuming you make daily backups in which case if a virus did come through, you would have no worries :)

Haha..No NickCat, my security is always up to date :-)

Daily backups don't mean squat if a trojan is running on your computer. I don't worry about losing anything, I mean there is almost nothing any scriptkiddy with a little woody and a trojan server on my computer could do to permanently lose/destroy my data.

It's my data being copied to a remote computer I would worry about. Not only pictures, but years of data for my business, web development projects, financials... my l33t lesbian porn collection.. I'd be devastated!

Most here know that no single AV is 100%... I typically have several, all configured to play nice together. I have VM's (WindowsXP & 7) that do any dirty work I need done. The computers I use for recovering data and working with customers data are not connected to the net.... I'm careful... but things happen. At least with Ubuntu about 99.8% of all malware is useless and ineffective.

Much lower risks.... the last 8 years of my life is on this computer!
