I have a Toshiba Satellite S75D-A7272 laptop. It started shutting down randomly maybe around Oct 2025. The screen will go black and turn off after a few seconds. I purchased an inland replacement battery in Sep 2025 which made me think maybe the battery caused it. However it was several weeks after the new battery install before the first random shutdown.

The shutdowns sometimes happen within just a few seconds of turning on. It seems the computer is now shutting off sooner within a few mins to a few hours where before I had to wait almost a day before it would happen.

It should be noted I have owned this laptop since 2014 and often leave it running. I use it more like a desktop connected to a monitor and it goes into sleep mode when not in use.

Troubleshooting

---------------

Cleaned Vents/Fans: No change

Monitor Temps: Temps were normal using HWINFO

Checked Power: Ran with the new battery, old battery, and only on charger. Still shuts down

Checked Event Viewer: Observed a critical event for kernel power fail around time of shutdown. This was not recorded in event viewer on every shutdown though.

Tested Memory: No errors with memtest or Windows Memory Diagnostic tool

Checked Memory: Ran with each ram stick separately. Still shuts down

Install OS: Installed ubuntu alongside windows. Still shuts down

Hard reset windows: Shut down during reinstall and corrupted HDD. Had to reformat HDD and use usb to install. Continued shutting down during reinstall. Removed cmos battery for 10 mins and was able to reinstall windows successfully. Computer worked well for a few days but shut downs returned.

Install ubuntu only: reformatted drive and tried installing ubuntu desktop only on HDD. Computer continues to shutdown during install. (current step)

Can anyone provide any helpful tips or insights? I wonder if the mother board is bad and needs to be replaced.

Your post, as well as your profile, identifies you as an end user. Per the Terms and Rules page of this site, "These forums are for either current computer technicians, or soon to be computer technicians. We do not provide computer help to any non-technicians." In your Technibble profile, you identify yourself as: Computer User (not a technician). As such, you do not fit the most basic requirement for membership.

I would suggest taking a look at BleepingComputer Forums, Tom's Hardware, Sysnative, Tech Support Forums, or any of a number of other forums dedicated to helping end users. Those listed are excellent resources and are all very active forums.

Also, you're talking about an ancient laptop with an out-of-support operating system. You're long past due to update your hardware.
