This one is weird - Acer Asus Windows 8

Got stuck in repair loop

Tried to boot to Win 8 recover stick

stayed in loop

in cmos went to legacy, couldn't use the down arrows to remove secure boot on same page

Started booting off stick

Got stuck in loop again

Now no operating system at all

No recovery partition using alt f10

Client/friend states he powered down by the button during an update and it's been doing that ever since.

No beeps or anything just shows no operating system

I'm thinking hard drive, but I'm better with software so I thought I'd check with you folks.

Why not check the drive SMART status using CrystalDisk Info after slaving the drive to your system and backing up the user data? Have you tried booting a Linux live CD to eliminate hardware as the problem?

I've had bad ram chips pull this reboot garbage on me before. Could be bad hd and ram chip. Unless someone has

I've only used the rescue stick and still got the repair loop. I did set boot order to usb first in CMOS. That's why I'm suspecting a RAM chip. I've had a couple computers act that way with bad RAM chip(s) before. I just haven't had time to take one out yet.

Which model Acer Asus is this?
Why couldn't you change from secure boot?
When you can get it to boot from usb or optical, try a live boot of Linux to test the hardware to make sure.

Sorry going by my memory

The down arrow simply wouldn't go to the secure boot part though I was able to change to legacy
I'll try to boot off an Ubuntu stick tonight but from what I've seen of the rescue stick loop I don't have high hopes

you won't get far if you can't disable secure boot.
Did you try this method of creating a supervisor password first?

Got it to boot off Ubuntu stick fine
Why does it loop with the Windows rescue stick?

Sorry I hadn't replied back. Been busy which is a good thing.

Since I had to reformat anyway I talked my client into using Ubuntu. He loves it.

Based on my clientele, I don't think that's a phrase I would ever actually say.

Always make sure AHCI setting is configured correctly for win 8 or UEFI based board.

Not Windows 8 but windows 7 i had similar after power off at start up, was looping in windows auto-repair mode, tried repairboot etc to no avail, pulled out my last resort D7II offline, deleted temps, removed start up entries of AV from registry (you could remove all other progs from startup too, rebooted back into windows, immediately ran Full reg backup via D7II as that's a real life saver for corrupted Windows.

I forgot about D7ll. I've been using tweakingrepair a lot though. It's gotten me lazy on my dos commands
