Things we hate reading...

Just the other day I had a Toshiba laptop in the shop. I actually had a bit of a challenge here as she said she had a virus attack. This is the same lady that told me that since she got it back from me a month ago she had just turned it on. I found a lot of weird issues. Things like programs wouild not uninstall and would error out, Installed icons would come up missing on the desktop and menus (WTF?) and general overall slowness when booting. I sorted everything out and tested all the hardware and ran several virus / rootkit scans and then brought it back to her house. While I was explaining all my work she said she had some questions:

She was totally noob on how to do the simplest things with the laptop. She asked me what the desktop was, The browser, and Task bar. Then she goes to shutdown the computer and holds the power button in. I looked at her and said "What are you doing?" and she said she was turning it off. Now I know how the file system damage occured - lol. I showed her the correct way of shutting down the computer and and she looked at me and said "When do you press this button then?".

She is a teacher.

Some people just should not have computers. But I would think a teacher would have at least some rudimentary knowledge of how to use a computer.

well it worked fine when it was in your shop, but as soon as I got it home this happened.....

I know you fixed it 6 months ago, but I haven't really used it since, but now it's doing this..... (log files show they were on it every day!)

you did a diagnostic, and now all of a sudden by mouse pad isn't working (because clearly the 2 are co-dependent of each other)

I lost my document.
Where was it stored?
In Word.

Word has my document I've been working on for 4 hours, it is locked up and it's saying "this file is corrupted".
Ok, close your document and re-open it.
OK....man I need this done by 5:00 (it's now 4:00)
Reopen your document.
How?
Where did you store it.
I didn't get a chance to save it yet!!!!!!!

What's your e-mail user name and password?
Don't have one.
Yes, you need a user name and password. One was set up when you set up your account.
Never did before. Didn't get one.
How did you log in?
Just clicked the button.

What version of Windows are you using?
Microsoft.

I lost a document I set up in Microsoft!

My computer is slow, I need a bigger hard drive.

Can you get my new Win 8 machine to look and run like my old XP machine?

Why can't you just transfer everything (including programs, etc.) to my new Win 8 machine.

Anti-virus - expired 2005 version!

Close all your programs and go to your desktop.
OK.
What icons do you have and what do you see?
No icon, a coffee cup, stapler, several piles of paper, pen holder, etc.

Why can't I just pull the plug when I'm done, it's so much faster.

What browser are you using?
Microsoft.
Double click the Blue E icon on your desktop.
OK
What does it do?
It says Firefox is already running
?????????????

And on and on and on!
Users are stupid. They are all "just" button pushers and have no idea as to what they are doing.

I bet they haven't changed their "Blinker Fluid" in years.

Client brings computer in a saturday, said it was urgent and important for his business.
I take him in (I work from home), check the computer on the spot, power supply, 125$ to fix, and I cant fix it right now.

Client said wait, I'll take it to my tech guy this monday so he can fix it for less.
Thanks for the diagnostic...drives off in his BMW...

I just stood there, completely hopeless, my faith in humanity vanished.
That's because he has all of his money tied up in things that make HIM look good to others. See, he even impressed you. ;)

My friend said he could fix it .....
Did you install anything before last repair "no"...
I like AVG please leave it on..

Damn this like Family Feud - Techs Edition

Best answer is.. I dont know any of my passwords.

I occasionally get the pc that won't even turn on and probably has a bad motherboard. They respond back with "I only use it to check email, so just get that working and don't bother about the motherboard."

They think just because they only need it for one simple thing that the pc will be like "oh you just need to check your email? I guess I can come back from the dead for that"

This isn't a common one, but I need to post it anyways. We had a guy come in looking at our refurb laptops. He starts talking about the RAM and hard drive, and I can tell immediately that he has no clue what any of it does or how it works. He just wants to seem like he knows what he's talking about. I've got that before, and just assume that they are just trying to show that they're "knowledgable" consumers so that I wont try and rip them off. So I just nod and play it off until he puts his fingers to his chin and says "Now, do all your laptops come with motherboards?"

At that point I couldn't help but let out a little laugh. Eventually he says "he'll come back" for one later which is what I expected.

What I didn't expect was that when he returned a couple days later it would be to hand me his resume.
