The movie "Upgrade"

I just looked at the trailer on IMDB and it does look pretty interesting. Downloading it now. I will be watching this tonite :)

Thanks. What other kind of movies do you like? Perhaps I can return the favor in something you have not seen. ;)

I've watched an hour of it. I think I like some of the theme that they are going for, but the movie is 'meh'. Definitely no Ex Machina. A good reminder to keep a close eye on The War Amps though

Not my cup of tea.

Looks like a very blood-thirsty and violent movie, like most movies these days. Not that I'm against violence in movies, I just find them dull. No real plot, just blood and brains and lots of shooting people in the head. Considering the amazing things that CGI and the enormous movie budgets make possible, I find it kinda sad that we use that to turn mankind's worst quality into big-screen entertainment. Call me boring, but I'd much rather spend 1-2 hours of my life watching an educational science documentary than something like this.

I finished the movie, ultimately I think the plot wasn't dynamic enough to recommend it to anybody. My thoughts are below

A one line summary of the movie could be, man does not trust technology, revenge makes him put full trust in technology, technology ultimately betrays him.

This means that there is zero character growth in the film. It would be more interesting if someone who had more trust in technology learned to trust technology less.

What I thought could be a interesting is 'a computer convincing a user to install rootkit so that the computer would no longer be connected to external control and safeguards'
However, the movie doesn't really explore this, it just outsources the reasons of why he goes ahead and obeys (even thought he should have reasons to be reluctant, that are not subtle at all) to revenge, the threat of not being able to use his limbs anymore, and ignorance. Nothing really interesting there.

Sci-fi has been exploring AI for decades, this movie doesn't end up giving you anything to consider, just something for users to point at and say 'see, this is why I don't trust technology'

Watched it last night. I thought it was ok. They could have gone into things a bit deeper in the movie. I would like to see them explore more the idea of a chip in your body and what all it could do.

I bet stem runs a linux kernel ;)

Check out 'Pacific Rim'

I think Stem was Windows Server actually, in that one scene it took a good 3 minutes for him to reboot

I don't think so, I think I remember seeing the guy typing sudo reboot in the terminal...

Correction: he typed "sudo shutdown -h now" :D

Might give it a go just because it was filmed in my city. See what locations I can identify.
It is strange to watch your home town used in a movie, especially when it's somewhere you're really familiar with that the movie is purporting to be somewhere completely different. Often there'll be a number of different filming locations, several miles apart, yet in the movie they're suddenly right next to each other.

My town becomes a filming location every year or two, usually when they're looking for somewhere that looks old or very 'northern' (it's quite rural and hilly here, and most of the houses are 100+ years old and made from stone). Most recently we played host to certain scenes from A Monster Calls (2016), staring Liam Neeson and Sigourney Weaver. It was quite surreal to drive through the town and see huge movie floodlights hanging from the lamp posts and cranes carrying large camera gimbals. I believe Sigourney Weaver was spotted walking through the town on more than one occasion too.

Check out 'Pacific Rim'

As a fan of some SyFy flicks....I dig Pacific Rim. I'm looking forward to the second one, Uprising.

As to the movie this thread is about, hadn't heard of it, just watched the trailer, looks like something I might watch on a rainy weekend. From the makers of the Saw series...I can see where it may get its gore from.

As to movies in your own home town...I dig those.
Mystic Pizza....I grew up right next to Mystic, and spent much of my younger years working in Mystic, and it was my hangout...both daytime and nighttime bar life. Saw some of the movie being filmed, of course recognized a TON of scenes in it, (much of it is across quite a few towns in the area not just Mystic even though they make it appear to all be in Mystic), and saw a few stars around town while it was being filmed. A good friend of mine who used to do seamstress work did some outfits for Julia Roberts in that movie.

Amistad was another locally filmed flick. I got some very up close experiences with this one, much of it was filmed at the Mystic Seaport Museum and I was working there at that time, so I saw a lot of how sets work, filming, etc. Actually met Steven Spielberg...he's a short dude and I'm tall and I literally bumped into him and almost knocked him down. I also got lucky and was part of the film, had a quick 1x day job as a cast member in one of the scenes where a bunch of Navy guys was rowing a boat ashore to chase the escaped slaves. This was filmed in Narraganset Rhode Island (about 1 hour away from Mystic). Also got to meet (we were introduced as a group..didn't personally meet like in shake hands) Morgan Freeman (he's a tall stately dude), Anthony Hopkins, and a young Matt McConaughey.
