Tech Club

I am currently going to school for IT Support, Website Development. At the college I attend there are clubs for criminal justice, culinary arts, automotive, etc. but there isn't one for computer or technology. I asked my teacher why there wasn't one and he said it was due to low interest from the students (valid reason to get rid of it), he also said that when they did have one the students lost interest in it and it basically fell apart.

Back on track: I am looking for ideas of what a Tech Club could do at school to keep its members interested. I figured for fund raising we could fix students computers at a low rate. But as far as extra activities go I am not sure how much there could be to do in this field. Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks

Jake

Could get involved in wireless networking. Its really cheap to get into. Download backtrack live cd and you can start sniffing traffic and looking at packets. Use wireshark to look at your yahoo mail in the clear. make a bi-quad antenna for a couple of dollars in parts. build a parabolic reflector from cardboard and tinfoil to boost a routers antenna in a given direction. map out the open access points around the college.

I think this sort of thing definitely needs group-oriented projects and events to maintain interest. Community programming or hardware development projects are always good...An occasional LAN party is sure to pique interest. Something along the line of a club-sponsored community WISP might be fun, and it would give members something to focus on.
