System keeps locking up transfering files at about 75%

I'm copying files from a local eSATA drive to a samba share and the system keeps locking up at around 75% completion of the data transfer. I first tried copying the same directory (about 30Gb) and it would lock up around 73-75%, the system would freeze with a strange buzzing sound. I thought it was a freak occurance at first and then I tried it two more times with the same files and had the same thing happen.

I then tried to copy another folder of about half the size and the same thing happened at about the same percentage.

The only thing I can do is a hard reboot/reset.

There is more than enough room on the target drive and I'm using Teracopy to copy the files.

These files originated on another machine with a USB drive. I transfered them to my main desktop and this is where I'm getting the error (transferring from my main desktop to my samba share). I tried transferring from the USB drive on the other machine to the samba share and I get no lockup or errors like I do with the main machine. I'm also using Teracopy as well.

Does anyone have any idea what might be causing an error like this and what to do to fix it?

Have you run smart tests on both the source and destination drives? Checked the event log? The Samba logs?

You had to start over (none of the files in the directory were copied)? Have you tried copying single files?

Ya, there you go. Sounds to me like a bad disk.

Well, I've gone to copying the same files, only from the original source (usb drive - they were copied to the main desktop for renaming and editing), and I had no problems with locking up and they are all copying to the same drive and over the same switch.

I haven't checked SMART or anything. It's a new drive so maybe there is something wrong with it.

Thanks for the suggestions on checking the samba logs. I did check the event viewer and didn't see anything related to the copying.

Could someone take a look at these event logs and see if they can pinpoint the source of the issue. I know it is saying something about ATAPI but I thought that had something to do with CD-ROM/optical drives but there is no copying from optical devices.

I copied the error messages and it seems that there were a lot before the system locked up. Is this originating on the source or the destination machine?

Sounds likely that your eSata drive has bad sectors. You can check with something like hddscan: http://hddguru.com/software/2006.01.22-HDDScan/.

It's a new drive so maybe there is something wrong with it.

Keep in mind, new or old, bad sectors (or other problems) can creep up anytime.
