Stumped...how to reinstall software without CD

So I currently have a client who has a virus and a multitude of errors on her machine.

She has an archaic client billing software suite from early 2000s. I need to reformat this machine but the cost of a re-download of this horrible software is $500, so I need to figure out a way to reformat the drive and relocate her software suite without an actual CD.

Does anybody know of a way to reinstall software without a CD? I am going to try some things but if anyone has ideas or tutorials on this I would greatly appreciate it.

My question was clear and precise, thanks for your "help" by telling me that my question was dumb.

Your user name suites you. I'll go elsewhere.

How was it clear and precise? No software name. No os information. No details at all. Just "errors" and a completely generic question. We're tired of playing detective with these kinds of questions. Hence the links I provided.

Honestly...if it is only going to cost 500 bucks to get a fresh source for this software (like she just needs to renew her annual support agreement)...insist she does that.

You are likely to spend more time....and effort....trying to manually copy over this program, and manually copy over files...and manually register DLLs....and constantly launch it, wait for an error...it will point to a missing file, you go find that file on old computer, copy it over, repeat the process several hundred times...unless you enjoy volunteering your time...it will cost her more money for you to do it this way.

You can try those "ez transfer" programs like PCMover or ZInstall or Aloha Bob or whatever...personally I think those programs just lead to a buggy new system.

Line of business applications should always have their support contract renewed each year, rule of thumb for me for my clients.

The name/version of the prog would have helped. Setup might not even run on Win7 if it's that old.

Ok, so all of 7 posts in - 3 of which are in this thread, 2 in a "share your Steam id" thread, 1 nearly conspiratorial rant about bad cops and government, and a very weak intro - and you are upset because no one has taken your "problem" seriously?

And, no, your post was actually not specific enough to offer any real suggestions. So when angry_geek (a TN veteran) sends you links to posts about how to ask good questions, it means you are not asking your questions well. You had zero details about the software in question (yes, it matters) or the OS in question (yes, that matters, too).

If you are a tech, you will find this forum endlessly useful. Get up, brush off you ego, and learn to provide more details in your posts. If you don't care to do that, then feel free to "go elsewhere" as you suggested.

Since your going somewhere else why not start here?

Hey everyone! So luckily I managed to fix this issue! Appreciate all the feedback.

The software package mentioned is (QuickPractice) and it is for medical billing and client databasing FYI.

Here are the simple steps I took to go about finding and successfully reinstalling software from a extremely corrupted windows 7 installation.

1. Boot Ubuntu from CD and access harddrive
2. Go into Program Files, find folder pertaining to software
3. Copy all contents of folder and drag to usb drive
4. On good, smooth working laptop drag the folder onto desktop
5. Then, look for EXE file and double click
Your program should then load, you definitely want to test and see if the program works by loading it on a good smooth working laptop. As these things don't often work and many times you will need the setup file, but luckily by copying the entire folder the EXE was enough to load all drivers and successfully boot the program.

Now all I need to do is reinstall the OS...
Hopefully someone will learn from this. Thanks for all of the genuine responses, you know who you are.

Thanks for help, but as I wrote above, I managed to successfully transfer the program over and it works! Check out my step by step instructions.

Somehow you magically figured out what I was talking about... hmmm... could it be .. how does that work guys? 2 people give you honest advice, but yet 6 other users (who lets be honest, could use a brush up on their reading comprehension skills, especially if you're in THIS business) just troll your post...

seems to me like yall need some quality control round here.

Nope, just pest control so to speak...

Post a generic, uninformed question and expect what you get. You didn't even put the least amount of effort into your original post, yet you feel jilted because a well respected veteran (who I think did more for you and was more polite than you deserved) doesn't do cartwheels providing you a plethora of answers to the many possible scenarios your vague question had. What a freaking sense of entitlement!

Feel free to go away.

You're exactly right. Some quality control is definitely needed.

Good luck in your endeavors. Nice "fix".

I'm trying to figure out why "try copying off the old software" would have needed to be suggested by anyone here. Every legitimate tech knows that ancient software didn't write to the registry (because, back then, there wasn't one) and could /sometimes/ be copied right onto another system. Why would anyone here even need to make a suggestion when that's the first thing a tech should have already done?

Thanks for shaming me publicly and trolling my post, which I found the solution to already.

Frankly you should be ashamed. Your post amounted to "I want to move a program. How do I do that?"

Look, like I said, your original post was lacking. Angry_geek tried to politely tell you that. But, instead of taking his feedback and providing important information, you decided to get your feelings hurt. Not all of us here have time to help guys like that, in fact we are tired of what seems to be the dumbing down of this forum by users who post like you did. Check you precious ego at the door, suck it up, and try again. Or go elsewhere. I don't care which one you do, but please do one of them.
